Group Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp
Group Trekking in Annapurna Base Camp is one of Nepal's most popular trekking options. On Swotah's 12-day itinerary the trailhead is the village of Nayapul, a long day's drive (around 7 to 8 hours) from Kathmandu, or about 1.5 hours from Pokhara. From Nayapul you reach base camp on the fifth day of walking, via Ghandruk, Chhomrong and Deurali, at an altitude of 4,130 m.
The Annapurna Base Camp trek is a moderate to challenging trek, depending on your fitness level. The trail is well-marked and there are plenty of teahouses along the way. It used to be a favourite for independent trekkers, but since 1 April 2023 a licensed guide has been required in the Annapurna Conservation Area, so most people now go with a group or a private guide.
The scenery on the trek is simply stunning, with snow-capped mountains, green valleys, and terraced rice fields. The highlight of the trek is undoubtedly the view from Annapurna Base Camp, which includes the majestic Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) and Annapurna I (8,091 m).

Group Trekking on the Manaslu Circuit
The Manaslu Circuit is one of the most popular restricted-area treks in Nepal. The trek takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Nepal, including the Manaslu Conservation Area. The trek is a bit challenging, but it is well worth it.
The Manaslu Circuit is a great way to see Nepal and escape the city life's hustle and bustle.
The trek used to start in the village of Arughat. Jeeps now reach Machha Khola (870 m), where Swotah's 14-day itinerary begins, and the trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River up to the high pass of Larke La (5,106 m) before descending into the Annapurna region. The route reopened after the 11 October 2026 Budhi Gandaki flood, with jeeps running to Machha Khola again.
Nearly everyone walks the circuit anticlockwise, up the Budhi Gandaki and out to Besisahar, because the slow climb up the valley gives you time to acclimatise before the pass.
Manaslu is a restricted area, so you need a Restricted Area Permit, the Manaslu and Annapurna conservation area permits, and a licensed guide. Until March 2026 the permit also needed at least two trekkers, which made joining a group the easy option for solo walkers. Langtang reopened for trekking on 22 October 2026 after the August flood, and treks now start from Thulo Syabru. The Tamang Heritage Trail is still paused.

Guide and Permit Rules for Group Treks
Since 1 April 2023 Nepal has required trekkers in national parks and conservation areas to walk with a licensed guide, and the TIMS card is issued only through registered agencies. A group trek covers this automatically. The Khumbu is the main exception in practice, where the local municipality runs its own permit and the rule is not enforced. Restricted areas such as Manaslu, Tsum and Upper Mustang always need a guide and a Restricted Area Permit. Drawbacks of Group Trekking in Nepal
Even the best trips can have problems. There are some drawbacks to group trekking in Nepal.
One of Nepal's main drawbacks of group trekking is the lack of flexibility. When you are part of a group, you have to stick to the itinerary set by the tour company or guide. This can be frustrating if you want to explore a certain area in more depth or take a detour to see something that interests you.
Another downside is that you share the trip with people you didn't choose, and a few smaller frustrations come with that:
