Indonesia spans 17,508 islands across 5,150 km — wider than the United States. It is the world's fourth most populous country at 277 million people, the largest Muslim-majority country, and the largest archipelagic state. The country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has 130 active volcanoes, more than any other country.
For travellers, Indonesia divides by island. Bali — a Hindu enclave with 20,000 temples, rice terraces and surf breaks — is the iconic introduction. Java holds the volcanoes of Bromo and Ijen, plus the Borobudur and Prambanan UNESCO temples. Flores is the gateway to the Komodo dragons and Pink Beach. Borneo (Kalimantan) has the orangutans of Tanjung Puting.
