Dog Rescue Volunteering Day with Sneha’s Care
Comprehensive Trek Guide

Join us for a Dog Rescue Volunteering Day with Sneha’s Care, where you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of Nepal’s vulnerable street dogs. Sneha’s Care, a dedicated animal sanctuary in the heart of Lalitpur, works tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and care for injured, abandoned, and abused animals, with a special focus on street dogs in Kathmandu. This one-day experience invites you to be part of this vital mission by lending a helping hand to the animals in need. As a volunteer, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the critical work being done by Sneha’s Care while also participating in meaningful activities that directly improve the well-being of the dogs.
Sneha’s Care was founded in 2014 by Sneha Shrestha, an animal activist who became deeply concerned about the rampant abuse, neglect, and mistreatment of street dogs and other animals in Nepal. Moved by the cruelty she witnessed, Sneha decided to take action and dedicate her life to rescuing and caring for the thousands of animals in need across Kathmandu and beyond. What began as a personal mission to save individual dogs soon evolved into a full-scale operation, addressing the broader issues of animal welfare and rights in Nepal.
Today, Sneha’s Care is one of the leading animal welfare organizations in Nepal, with a strong focus on rescuing, rehabilitating, and advocating for the street dogs that roam the cities, often subjected to cruelty and neglect. In addition to dogs, the organization also cares for a variety of other animals, including cattle, buffaloes, goats, pigs, and other farm animals, many of whom have been rescued from abusive conditions.
This One-Day Volunteering Tour at Sneha’s Care Animal Sanctuary is designed to provide you with a hands-on, fulfilling experience that makes a lasting impact on both you and the animals you help. The day begins with a convenient pick-up from jawalakhel, where you will join a small group of like-minded volunteers. You will then be transported to the sanctuary, located in the scenic Lalitpur District, just outside the bustling city of Kathmandu.
On arrival, you’ll be welcomed by the dedicated staff at Sneha’s Care, who will introduce you to the sanctuary’s mission and the daily routine of the animals you’ll be working with. You’ll meet some of the 150+ dogs that call the sanctuary home, along with farm animals including cattle, buffaloes, goats, pigs, and even a sheep—all of whom have been rescued from neglect, cruelty, or abandonment.
During the day, you will be involved in a range of activities designed to improve the lives of these animals. Tasks may include:
-
Feeding and Caring for the Animals: Assist the staff in preparing food and feeding the dogs and farm animals. You’ll get a chance to interact with the animals during feeding time, a heartwarming experience as you see how grateful and happy they are for a simple meal.
-
Walking and Playing with the Dogs: Many of the dogs at Sneha’s Care have experienced significant trauma and rely on human interaction for their rehabilitation. Walking the dogs around the peaceful grounds and engaging with them in play sessions is both therapeutic for the animals and incredibly rewarding for volunteers.
-
Cleaning and Maintaining Animal Enclosures: Keeping the sanctuary clean and safe is essential to the animals’ well-being. You’ll assist with maintaining the cleanliness of their enclosures, ensuring the animals have a comfortable, hygienic space to live in.
-
Assisting with Medical Care: Depending on the needs of the day, volunteers may have the opportunity to assist with minor medical tasks such as administering medication or bandaging wounds under the supervision of a veterinarian. This will give you a unique insight into the critical medical care that many of these animals need after being rescued.
Beyond these hands-on tasks, your day will also include learning about the broader mission of Sneha’s Care, including their advocacy work for animal rights, their campaigns to introduce animal welfare laws, and their efforts to educate the public about responsible pet ownership. You will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges street animals face in Nepal, as well as the steps locals and travelers can take to make a positive impact.
A midday break will give you the chance to recharge with a vegan-friendly lunch provided at the sanctuary. As Sneha’s Care promotes a plant-based lifestyle as part of their mission to reduce cruelty towards animals, this meal will offer a taste of how delicious and compassionate vegan food can be. During lunch, you’ll also have time to reflect on the work done so far and ask any questions you may have about the sanctuary’s work, the animals, or animal welfare issues in Nepal.
After lunch, the second half of the day offers more time to engage with the animals. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in animal therapy sessions, where you can continue to walk, play, and interact with the dogs and other animals. This therapeutic interaction is vital to their recovery, and spending time with the animals is often a deeply emotional and fulfilling experience for volunteers.
In addition to animal therapy, you’ll learn about Sneha’s Care’s community outreach programs, where they educate local schools and communities about plant-based diets, responsible pet ownership, and the importance of animal welfare. This broader vision of creating a compassionate society for both humans and animals gives volunteers a more profound sense of the impact Sneha’s Care is making, beyond just the day-to-day care of the animals.
As a non-profit organization, Sneha’s Care relies on donations to continue its vital work. Though this tour is offered free of charge, we encourage volunteers to consider making a donation, no matter the size. Your contribution helps provide medical care, food, and shelter to animals in desperate need, and ensures that the sanctuary can continue rescuing and rehabilitating animals across Nepal.
As the day winds down, you’ll have some free time to bid farewell to the animals and reflect on the day’s experiences. You’ll leave with unforgettable memories and the knowledge that you’ve made a difference in the lives of the animals you’ve helped. A comfortable return trip will bring you back to Satdobato by late afternoon, giving you the chance to relax and reflect on this meaningful, one-of-a-kind experience.
