Trip Overview
About the Bardiya National Park Safari
Bardiya National Park Safari is a 7-day wildlife trip to the largest protected area in Nepal's Terai, a 968 km² lowland reserve in the far-western Karnali-Babai river basin. Established in 1988 and far quieter than Chitwan, Bardiya gives serious wildlife watchers a genuine shot at Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinoceroses, wild elephants and Gangetic dolphins in country that sees only a fraction of Nepal's tourist traffic.
The park holds at least 53 species of mammals, more than 400 species of birds, and 125 species of fish recorded in the Karnali and Babai river systems. Activities run the full range of lowland safari: guided walks along the Karnali riverbank, jeep drives through sal forest corridors, a dugout canoe float to scan for gharials and river dolphins, and an evening with the Tharu community whose villages border the park's southern edge.
The trip is flat, low-altitude and physically easy. The Terai sits between 100 m and 300 m above sea level, so heat rather than altitude is the real factor to plan around. Autumn and spring give the clearest animal-spotting conditions. The sections below cover the best season, park permits, lodge accommodation and what to bring into the jungle.

After breakfast, a domestic flight of about 55 minutes reaches Nepalgunj in the mid-western Terai. From there a 2-hour private vehicle transfer north-east along the Babai valley brings you to Thakurdwar, the main gateway village for Bardiya National Park. Nepalgunj is the last reliable ATM and pharmacy stop before the park, so top up cash here if needed. On arrival at the lodge your guide gives the park safety and wildlife briefing. In the evening you explore the Tharu settlement adjacent to the lodge and join an introductory cultural session. Overnight at jungle guesthouse.

The day starts at 05:30 with a guided walk of 2 to 3 hours along the Karnali riverbank. The river and its tributaries hold 125 recorded fish species, a resident population of gharials, mugger crocodiles, and 23 other reptile and amphibian species; early morning is when the sandbanks are most active. After breakfast and a midday rest, the afternoon brings a full jeep safari through the sal forest corridors. Bardiya holds at least 53 mammal species including one-horned rhinoceroses, wild elephants, swamp deer and, with luck, a Bengal tiger moving through the grass margins. Your naturalist guide reads tracks and signs throughout. Overnight at jungle resort.

An early-morning jeep drive before sunrise covers the open floodplain areas where carnivores are most active. Tigers are most often encountered on these pre-dawn circuits in the dry forest corridors between the Karnali and Babai rivers. In the afternoon a dugout canoe float on the Karnali gives close access to the river channel: Gangetic dolphins surface in the deeper pools, gharials bask on the sandbanks, and fishing eagles work the shallows. Currents are gentle and no paddling experience is needed. This section also covers an optional short white-water raft on a faster Karnali stretch if conditions allow. Overnight at jungle resort.

Bardiya's bird list exceeds 400 recorded species, and the most productive window for photography is the first two hours after dawn. Bengal florican, white-rumped vulture, lesser adjutant stork, great hornbill, peafowl and bar-headed goose are regularly logged near the forest edge and the grassland patches. After breakfast, a guided walk through the park buffer zone leads to a Tharu village. Your guide, often from a Tharu family, explains the community's agricultural calendar, traditional fishing methods and the history of the Karnali floodplain before national park boundaries were drawn. In the evening the lodge hosts a Tharu cultural programme: stick dance, music and locally prepared food. Overnight at jungle resort.

Everything you need to know

Bardiya National Park Safari is an easy, flat-terrain trip. Every activity happens below 300 m in the Terai lowlands: guided walks along the Karnali riverbank (2 to 3 hours each), jeep drives through sal and khair forest, a dugout canoe float, and early-morning bird watching from the lodge perimeter. None of it demands prior fitness training, and the youngest or oldest travellers in a group will keep the same pace.
Heat is the real physical factor. Terai temperatures reach 38 to 42 deg C in April through June and stay above 30 deg C through September, so early-morning starts (typically 05:30 to 06:00) and a midday rest at the lodge are standard practice. Your guide sets the pace; if you need water or shade, say so. The evening canoe and jeep runs are cooler and are often when wildlife is most active near the riverbanks.
October and November are the top months for Bardiya, with dry air, low grass after the monsoon burn-off, and temperatures between 18 and 30 deg C that are comfortable for full-day game drives. Tigers and rhinos are easiest to spot when the tall grasses are cut or grazed down and water sources concentrate animals at the rivers.
February through April is a strong second window: slightly warmer but still clear and dry, with resident bird species joined by early migrants. March and April bring maximum flowering of the silk-cotton and sal trees. The monsoon (mid-June to September) makes jeep tracks muddy and the grass grows over three metres tall, which cuts visibility severely; some lodges close. December and January are cool (night lows below 10 deg C) but perfectly clear for animal sightings if you pack warm layers for dawn starts.
Bardiya National Park entry requires a permit purchased at the Thakurdwar entrance gate. As of 2024 the standard fee is NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals (roughly USD 22 to 25 at current rates) per day or per visit, depending on the activity category. Swotah's package price includes all necessary park permits, so you will not need to handle the paperwork at the gate.
Nepal tourist visa-on-arrival is available for most nationalities at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport: 15-day (USD 30), 30-day (USD 50) or 90-day (USD 125). Bring a passport valid for at least six months, one passport photo and the fee in cash. No ACAP or conservation area permit is required for Bardiya; the NP entry permit covers all activities. Swotah advises on the latest fee schedule before departure.
Accommodation at the park is a jungle lodge or eco-resort at the edge of Thakurdwar village, the main gateway settlement for Bardiya. Rooms are en-suite with fans (air conditioning in upgraded cabins), hot water and mosquito nets. The lodges sit within earshot of the forest, and animals occasionally pass through the perimeter at night.
In Kathmandu you stay in a standard 3-star hotel with private bathroom, hot water and Wi-Fi. Upgrades to boutique lodges inside or adjacent to the park boundary are available on request and give a more immersive experience. All accommodation is pre-booked, which matters in peak October and November when lodge capacity is limited.
At the jungle lodge, all meals are full board: breakfast before the morning safari, a packed lunch or set lunch at the lodge, and dinner in the evening. The menu runs from dal bhat (rice, lentils and vegetable curry) to western dishes like pasta and grilled chicken. Dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are manageable with advance notice.
Drinking water at the lodge is filtered and safe; bottled water is also available. In the field, your guide carries water on every walk and jeep drive. Tap water in the Terai is not reliably safe to drink untreated, so carry a purification bottle or tablets as backup. Alcohol is available at most lodges; the Tharu millet wine (jand) is worth trying with dinner.
The standard route is a 55-minute domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines or similar), followed by a 2-hour private vehicle transfer to Thakurdwar at the park entrance. Nepalgunj is the last town with ATMs, pharmacies and mobile network; stock up on cash before the park transfer.
The return on Day 5 is a full-day drive of approximately 10 hours from Thakurdwar back to Kathmandu via the East-West Highway, rejoining Kathmandu in the evening. This road passes through low hill country and Terai plains. A domestic flight for the return is possible if booked in advance; ask Swotah at booking time. Within the park all movement is in a 4WD jeep with a licensed naturalist guide.
Bengal tigers are the headline species: Bardiya's population is estimated at 125 to 150 individuals as of the 2022 Nepal Tiger Survey, with sighting rates among the highest in any park in the subcontinent. One-horned rhinoceroses are present in growing numbers following successful reintroduction from Chitwan; the Karnali floodplain supports a resident herd. Wild Asian elephants move through the western forests in family groups and are best seen on early-morning jeep drives along the Babai valley corridor.
Gangetic river dolphins patrol the deeper channels of the Karnali; the canoe float at dawn is the most reliable way to spot them. Gharials, the long-snouted fish-eating crocodile, bask on the sandbanks alongside mugger crocodiles. Swamp deer (barasingha), spotted deer and barking deer are common on the floodplains. The 400-plus bird species include Bengal florican (critically endangered), great hornbill, peafowl, fishing eagles and multiple kingfisher species. Sloth bears, leopards and striped hyenas are present but cryptic.
Tharu people are the indigenous community of the Bardiya lowlands, with a history of settlement in the Terai dating back several centuries before the eradication of malaria in the 1950s opened the region to outside migration. Their architecture, folk painting (known as Maithili-influenced kohbar art), fishing techniques and agricultural calendar are directly tied to the forest and river systems that now form the park.
The safari itinerary includes a village walk and an evening cultural programme: Tharu stick dance, traditional music and a chance to try locally prepared food. Your guide, who is often from a Tharu family, explains the relationship between conservation and community livelihoods. Buffer zone revenue from tourism is legally allocated to local schools, health posts and infrastructure, so the visit has a direct economic link to the families you meet.
Mobile coverage at Thakurdwar and the main lodge area is available on NTC (Nepal Telecom) and Ncell 4G networks, though signal inside the dense forest is intermittent. Most lodges have Wi-Fi in the common area; speed is adequate for messaging and light browsing. Swotah provides a tourist SIM loaded with data on arrival in Kathmandu.
Power sockets at the lodge accept standard two- and three-pin plugs; a universal travel adapter is worth carrying. A power bank rated at 20,000 mAh is the practical backup for full-day field activities. Charge all devices the night before each early-morning start; the vehicles do not have USB outlets.
Responsible safari practice keeps Bardiya's wildlife and communities intact for the next generation of visitors. On game drives stay in the vehicle unless your naturalist guide signals otherwise; do not use flash photography near resting animals; keep noise minimal near herds; and follow all instructions from the licensed guide. The park boundary is real and must not be crossed on foot without an authorised escort.
Tipping is customary but not mandatory. A common guideline is 10 to 15 percent of the total trip cost, distributed between the naturalist guide, jeep driver, lodge support staff and the Kathmandu city guide. Tips go directly to the individuals, not to Swotah. Booking with a registered operator ensures park permits, entry fees and all staff costs are paid correctly, which supports the buffer-zone community funds tied to conservation outcomes.

Neutral colours (khaki, green, olive) are essential for game drives because bright clothing disturbs wildlife. Bring lightweight long-sleeved shirts and trousers for sun and insect protection during the day. A light rain jacket is useful June to September. A warm layer is needed for December and January dawn starts when temperatures drop below 10 deg C. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are better than sandals on jungle walks.
Jungle walks at Bardiya are typically 2 to 3 hours on flat terrain along the Karnali riverbank or through the forest edge. These are guided, unhurried walks, not strenuous hikes. Jeep safaris and canoe floats do not require walking. Most guests find the pace comfortable regardless of age or fitness level.

Travel and medical evacuation insurance is mandatory for this trip. In a medical emergency your guide contacts Swotah immediately and the nearest vehicle takes you to the hospital in Nepalgunj. The lodge staff have a first-aid kit and emergency contact numbers. Make sure your insurance covers hospitalisation and medical evacuation in Nepal.

Before coming to Nepal makes sure you are covered for diphtheria & TB, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, malaria, typhoid, polio and tetanus. Make sure you are with the healthy health so that you can travel without any complication.
There are plenty of water stations on each stop on the route. You can easily fill up the bottle from the open taps. We recommend that you bring water purifier tablets with you or at least get it from Kathmandu before you depart for trekking. You can also buy mineral waters but we usually recommend tap water which is pure and it helps us not promoting plastic bottled water.
All Swotah guides and naturalists are licensed by the Nepal Tourism Board. Our Bardiya naturalists have specific wildlife and park training and know the Karnali corridor well. They are responsible for your safety and for the quality of your game sightings throughout the safari.
