Trip Overview

About the Mani Rimdu Festival Trek in Everest Region

The Mani Rimdu Festival Trek in the Everest Region is a 13-day trek that pairs the classic Khumbu approach route with the three-day public festival at Tengboche Monastery (3,870 m), the largest and most important monastery in the Khumbu valley. The festival falls at the full moon of the ninth Tibetan lunar month, which places it in October or November each year, and is celebrated by the Sherpa communities of the Everest region with masked ritual dances, religious ceremonies and a final public blessing by the head lama.

The route follows the standard Namche corridor: a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,860 m), a walk down to Phakding (2,656 m) on day two, then the long climb to Namche Bazar (3,450 m) and an acclimatisation day before the final push up to Tengboche. Days 6 to 8 are spent at the monastery for the three days of public festival, watching the cham dances performed by monks in elaborate masks, attending the empowerment ceremonies and receiving the blessing on the final morning. The return follows the same valley, finishing with a flight back to Kathmandu.

Max altitude is 3,870 m at Tengboche, which is modest by Khumbu standards; this trek suits walkers at the active or moderate fitness level who want a cultural focus alongside the mountain scenery. An acclimatisation day at Namche keeps the ascent safe. The sections below cover the festival calendar, permits, trail conditions and what to pack for October-November in the Khumbu.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

The Mani Rimdu Festival Trek is graded moderate. The highest point is Tengboche Monastery at 3,870 m (12,697 ft), which is well below the altitudes that cause serious acute mountain sickness in acclimatised trekkers, and the itinerary builds in a rest day at Namche Bazar (3,450 m) before the final 400 m climb to the monastery. Days run 4 to 6 hours on well-maintained trail with clear signs, tea-house stops and a guide throughout.

The climb from Phakding to Namche is the most demanding section: a long, steep pull of around 800 m over 5 to 6 hours, which the itinerary keeps as a single dedicated day. After Namche the trail is gentler. Anyone who walks regularly, can manage 5 to 6 hours a day with a light daypack, and is comfortable on rough stone paths is well prepared for this route. Swotah guides carry a first-aid kit and a pulse oximeter; tell your guide at the first sign of headache, nausea or unusual fatigue.
