Trip Overview

About the Poon Hill Sun Salutation Yoga Trek

The Poon Hill Sun Salutation Yoga Trek is a 10-day trek through the Annapurna foothills that pairs the Ghorepani-Poon Hill route with a daily Surya Namaskar practice, the 12-posture sun salutation sequence performed at sunrise facing the Annapurna massif. The route climbs from Tikhedhunga at 1,480 m to Ghorepani at 3,194 m and reaches its high point at Poon Hill, 3,210 m, where a pre-dawn yoga session greets Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri I above the clouds.

Walking days pass through Gurung and Magar villages, oak and rhododendron forest and stone-paved trail sections that are among the most accessible in Nepal. The circuit descends through Tadapani at 2,590 m and Ghandruk at 1,940 m, one of the best-preserved Gurung settlements in the Annapurna Conservation Area, before returning to Pokhara. ACAP and TIMS permits cover the protected area. A licensed yoga instructor accompanies every group and leads morning and evening sessions at each camp, adapting the practice to altitude and individual fitness.

The trek needs no technical skill, but three to four hours of walking a day over mixed trail calls for a reasonable base of fitness. The sections below cover difficulty, best season, permits, accommodation, food and what to pack.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

The Poon Hill Sun Salutation Yoga Trek is graded easy to moderate, making it one of the most accessible multi-day treks in Nepal. Daily walking sections run 3 to 5 hours on stone-paved and well-maintained trail, with net elevation gains of 600 to 1,200 m on the harder days. The steepest single section is the staircase from Ghorepani to Poon Hill (about 320 m of gain in one hour), climbed before dawn to catch the sunrise.

No technical skill is required, and porters carry the main bag so you walk with a light daypack. A reasonable base of fitness is enough: regular walks of 60 to 90 minutes three times a week in the two months before departure is a useful preparation target. The yoga sessions are inclusive -- the instructor scales each practice to the group's level -- so prior yoga experience is not necessary.
