Trip Overview

About the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek is a 22-day restricted-area trek around Mount Manaslu, the world's eighth-highest mountain at 8,163 m, with a side trip into the sacred, once-forbidden Tsum Valley. It crosses the Larkya La at 5,106 m, the high point of the circuit, and climbs from subtropical gorge along the Budhi Gandaki to dry, Tibetan-influenced highlands on the border with Tibet.

Tsum Valley is a hidden Buddhist enclave in the Nupri region, opened to trekkers only in 2008, with old gompas at Mu and Rachen, mani walls and villages that follow a tradition of non-violence toward animals. The main circuit then continues through Nupri villages like Lho, Sama Gaon and Samdo, with Manaslu and Himalchuli filling the skyline, before the long pass day to Bimthang and the descent to the Annapurna road head.

This is a strenuous, remote trek. There is no technical climbing, but the Larkya La is high and long, several nights are spent above 3,500 m, and the lodges are basic, so acute mountain sickness and self-sufficiency are the real concerns. Have a health check and be fit before you go. The sections below cover the restricted-area permits, the pass, Tsum Valley, seasons and what to pack.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley is graded strenuous, and altitude is the main reason. The route crosses the Larkya La at 5,106 m and spends several nights above 3,500 m around Sama Gaon, Samdo and Dharmasala, so acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a real risk, and the itinerary builds in acclimatisation days, including a rest day at Sama Gaon.

Days run 5 to 8 hours over rough, remote trail, and the pass day from Dharmasala is the longest, starting before dawn to cross in stable morning weather and reach Bimthang. There is no technical climbing, but the valley is isolated and the lodges are basic, so fitness and self-sufficiency matter. Anyone with a respiratory or heart condition should have a health check before booking, drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, and tell the guide early about any symptoms. Swotah guides carry a first-aid kit and a pulse oximeter.
