Wonders of Nepal is a 10-day cultural circuit that moves first-time visitors through the country's defining heritage sites, from the living temples of Kathmandu to the birthplace of the Buddha at Lumbini and the jungle rivers of Chitwan National Park. The route covers the Kathmandu Valley's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a panoramic mountain flight over Everest and Annapurna, Bhaktapur's medieval squares, the sacred pilgrimage town of Lumbini and a two-night wildlife stop in Chitwan.
Each day introduces a different face of Nepal. Kathmandu is a city of competing stupas, Hindu temples and Newari courtyards, all within a few kilometres of each other. Bhaktapur, 13 km east, preserves its medieval layout more completely than any other valley town, anchored by the 55-Window Palace and the five-storey Nyatapola temple. The mountain flight from Tribhuvan airport runs east along the Himalayan chain at cruising altitude, putting Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and a dozen other peaks in the aircraft window for about an hour. Lumbini, in the western Terai, is the verified birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama (approximately 623 BCE) and holds the Maya Devi Temple, the sacred garden and a ring of international monasteries. Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO site since 1984, protects 952 sq km of forest and grassland and holds one of Asia's healthiest one-horned rhinoceros populations.
No trekking experience is needed. The tour is low-altitude, topping out at Kathmandu's 1,400 m throughout, and the activities are sightseeing, a boat ride, a jungle walk and a canoe safari. The sections below cover the best season, permits, accommodation, food and what to pack.
