Trip Overview

About the 12 Days- Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The 12-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a moderate teahouse trek into the Annapurna Sanctuary, the glacial cirque enclosed by Annapurna I (8,091 m), Machhapuchhare (6,993 m), Hiunchuli (6,441 m) and eight other peaks. The route follows the Modi Khola river valley from Nayapul at 1,070 m, climbing through rhododendron forest, terraced Gurung and Magar villages and the narrow gorge at Deurali (3,300 m) to reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m on day 6.

Most of the walking stays below 3,500 m, so the altitude demand is manageable for fit trekkers without prior high-altitude experience. The route passes through Ghandruk, the largest Gurung village in the region, Chhomrong at 2,100 m with its stone-paved lanes and wide views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli, and the thermal springs at Jhinu Danda on the descent. The Annapurna Conservation Area is the largest protected area in Nepal at 7,629 km2, and the trail runs inside it for the full duration.

The trek requires two permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS card. The sections below cover difficulty and fitness, permits, accommodation, food, getting there and what to pack. Read this alongside the day-by-day itinerary before you go.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is graded moderate to challenging, which places it within reach of fit trekkers without prior Himalayan experience. The route tops out at 4,130 m at the Annapurna Sanctuary, and most nights are spent below 3,500 m, so the body has time to adjust at a natural pace. Daily walking runs 4 to 7 hours on a trail that is clear and well-used, with stone steps on the steeper sections through Chhomrong and the Sanctuary gorge.

The biggest physical demand is the cumulative gain: the route climbs roughly 3,060 m from Nayapul to Base Camp over five days. There is no technical climbing, no exposed ridge work and no glaciated terrain. Altitude symptoms can still occur in the Sanctuary above 3,500 m, so drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, rest if you feel headaches or nausea, and tell your guide early. Swotah guides carry a first-aid kit and a pulse oximeter on all ABC departures.
