For centuries Nepal sat on the trade route between India and Tibet — yaks carrying salt north, rice south, and traders crossing the Himalayan passes for nine months of the year. Today, paved roads now connect Kathmandu to Lhasa via the Friendship Highway (816 km), to Thimphu via Phuentsholing (520 km), and onward to Delhi, Varanasi and Bangkok.
Overland tours are the slow, low-altitude way to see the Himalaya from the seat of a 4WD or comfortable coach. The classic Nepal–Bhutan–Tibet three-country itinerary takes 18-21 days; Nepal–India Golden Triangle combinations 12-14 days. Permits are arranged by Swotah Travel as a single package.
