Trip Overview

About the 8 Days- Annapurna Poonhill Trek

The 8 Days Annapurna Poon Hill Trek is an eight-day circuit on the classic Ghorepani-Poon Hill route in the Annapurna Conservation Area, reaching 3,210 m at Poon Hill for the most-photographed Himalayan sunrise in Nepal. The trek links Nayapul, Tikhedhunga, Ghorepani and Ghandruk through rhododendron forest and Gurung and Magar villages, with Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m) and Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) in continuous view from the ridges.

The route is a loop: it climbs the Modi Khola watershed to Ghorepani at 3,194 m and descends the far side through Ghandruk, a large Gurung village with its own heritage trails and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project museum. Total walking is around 50 km across eight days, with daily stages of 3 to 6 hours, which makes it a realistic choice for families, beginners and anyone combining a trek with sightseeing in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Two permits are required: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers Information Management System card (TIMS). Both are arranged in Kathmandu or Pokhara before the trek begins. The sections below cover difficulty, the Poon Hill sunrise, best seasons and what to pack.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

The 8 Days Annapurna Poon Hill Trek is graded easy to moderate, with daily stages of 3 to 6 hours on a well-signed, well-maintained trail. The highest point is Poon Hill at 3,210 m, which is well below the altitude where acclimatisation becomes a serious concern, so altitude sickness is uncommon on this route.

The steepest section is the stone-staircase climb out of Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani, which gains around 1,700 m over one long day and is the most demanding stretch of the route. The pre-dawn climb to Poon Hill viewpoint takes 45 to 60 minutes from Ghorepani. Children aged 8 and above complete this route regularly. Trekkers with a knee condition should carry trekking poles, as the descent through Ghandruk involves some extended stone stair sections.

  • Annapurna Poonhill can be trekked all year around excluding monsoon season. February to June and Mid-September to December are the best time to do this trek, although in winters it’s difficult to trek in snow and harsh cold
