Trip Overview

About the Thorong La Pass Trekking: 13 Days Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Thorong La Pass Trek is a 13-day compact version of the Annapurna Circuit that drives the lower valley sections and focuses the walking on the mid-to-high altitude stretch, crossing Thorong La at 5,416 m, the highest trekking pass on the Annapurna Circuit and one of the most accessible passes above 5,000 m in Nepal. The route begins with a jeep transfer to Jagat, then walks through the Marshyangdi valley from Dharapani to Chame, Pisang, Ngawal and Manang before the final high-altitude days to Thorong La.

The pass sits on the ridge between the Annapurna massif and Dhaulagiri, with the Kali Gandaki valley falling away to the south and the dry Mustang plateau stretching north. Crossing it takes you from the Buddhist Gurung and Manangi world of the Marshyangdi to the Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage town of Muktinath at 3,710 m, one of the most sacred sites in both faiths. From Muktinath, a jeep covers the long Kali Gandaki section to Jomsom, then a flight links Jomsom to Pokhara for the drive back to Kathmandu.

This format suits trekkers with 13 days who want the heart of the circuit without the full 20-plus-day commitment. The trade-off is the lower Marshyangdi gorge, which has roads, replaced by driving time, so the days on foot are all at elevation. The passes below cover permits, difficulty, altitude, seasons, accommodation and what to pack.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

The Thorong La Pass Trek is graded moderate to strenuous, and altitude is the central challenge. The route climbs from Chame at 2,710 m to the pass at 5,416 m over five days, spending two nights above 3,500 m in Manang and one night at Thorong Phedi at 4,420 m before the crossing. Acute mountain sickness is a real risk at these elevations, and the itinerary builds in a full rest and acclimatisation day at Manang (3,519 m).

The pass day from Thorong Phedi starts before dawn, gains around 1,000 m to the prayer-flag-draped top, then drops more than 1,700 m to Muktinath at 3,710 m, covering 15 to 17 km in 7 to 8 hours. There is no technical climbing, but the high altitude, cold temperatures and physical length of the day make it serious. Anyone with a respiratory or cardiac condition should have a medical check before booking. Swotah guides carry a pulse oximeter and first-aid kit, and the descent option to Manang is available if altitude symptoms appear before the pass.
