Trip Overview

About the Danfe Trail Expedition

The Danfe Trail Expedition is a remarkable journey through some of Nepal's most remote and spectacular landscapes. Combining pristine alpine meadows, sacred pilgrimage sites, crystal-clear lakes, dense forests, and one of the country's most beautiful protected areas, this expedition offers an authentic Himalayan adventure away from the crowded trekking routes.

Beginning in Kathmandu, the journey heads west to the beautiful alpine landscapes of Ramaroshan in Accham District before trekking across high mountain ridges to the sacred Badimalika Temple. The expedition then continues to Nepal's largest lake inside Rara National Park before returning through the breathtaking Karnali Corridor.

Along the way, travelers experience diverse cultures, rich biodiversity, panoramic Himalayan scenery, and the warm hospitality of western Nepal.

Western Nepal remains one of the country's least explored trekking destinations. The Danfe Trail connects the beautiful alpine basin of Ramaroshan with the sacred Badimalika region before continuing to the spectacular landscapes of Rara National Park.

Ramaroshan is famous for its numerous alpine lakes, rolling grasslands, rhododendron forests, and panoramic mountain scenery. The region supports a rich variety of wildlife and birdlife, making it an excellent destination for nature enthusiasts.

The trek gradually ascends through forests and high ridges toward the revered Badimalika Temple, one of Nepal's most important pilgrimage destinations. Situated high in the mountains, the temple offers magnificent views of the Api, Saipal, and other western Himalayan ranges.

The journey then continues to Rara National Park, Nepal's smallest national park but home to the country's largest natural lake. The park protects diverse forests of pine, spruce, juniper, and fir while providing habitat for Himalayan Black Bear, Musk Deer, Himalayan Tahr, Leopard, and more than 200 bird species.

Returning via the legendary Karnali Corridor completes one of Nepal's finest overland Himalayan expeditions.

How hard is this trek?

The Danfe Trail Expedition is graded physically demanding. Trekking stages between Ramaroshan and Kolti run long, up to 10-12 hours on the biggest ridge days, over trails used mainly by shepherds and pilgrims. The high point at Badimalika Temple is about 4,200 m and camps sit near 3,300-3,900 m for four nights, so fitness, prior multi-day trekking experience and steady acclimatization all matter. There is no technical climbing, but the region is remote and evacuation points are days apart.

Demanding. Long ridge days up to 10-12 hrs, max 4,200 m (Badimalika), 4 camping nights above 3,300 m; remote terrain, no technical climbing.

Everything you need to know

The Danfe Trail Expedition is graded physically demanding. Six core trekking stages link Ramaroshan to Kolti, and the two biggest, the ridge traverse to Badimalika and the 2,800 m descent to Kolti, run 8-12 hours. The maximum elevation is about 4,200 m at Badimalika Temple, with four consecutive camping nights between 3,300 m and 3,900 m.

Acclimatization is built into the route. Two exploration days near 3,000 m at Ramaroshan precede the climb, and height gains between camps stay moderate. No technical skill is needed; the challenge is sustained effort and remoteness, since the nearest road between Ramaroshan and Kolti is days away. Previous multi-day trekking experience is strongly recommended, and training with long back-to-back hill days is the best preparation.
