Day 2 is the core of the Dhulikhel Balthali Hike. After a 45-minute drive from Kathmandu, you arrive in Dhulikhel, a Newar hilltop town at about 1,550 m with a panorama of the high Himalaya to the north and east. After lunch in town, you set off on a trail that climbs south-east through forest and open ridge to the Namobuddha stupa (about 1,730 m), one of the most important Tibetan-Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal. The stupa sits on the ridge where, according to Buddhist scripture, the prince Mahasattva fed his own body to a starving tigress. Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery, active and well-maintained, adjoins the stupa.
From Namobuddha the trail descends through rhododendron forest and terraced farms into the Roshi Khola valley and the farming village of Balthali, where you spend the night. Day 3 brings a shorter walk down through Sanagaun and Nyaupane Gaun to Khopasi, a village at the foot of the hills where the private car meets you for the return to Kathmandu. The medieval Newar town of Panauti, at the confluence of two rivers, sits about 1 to 2 km from Khopasi and is worth a short stop before the drive back if time allows.
