Golden Circle Trip is a 10-day cultural tour that connects Nepal's four most-visited destinations in a single, low-altitude loop: the ancient city of Kathmandu, the lakeside city of Pokhara, the sacred birthplace of Lord Buddha at Lumbini, and the jungle of Chitwan National Park. The route forms the classic 'golden circle' that gives the tour its name, and it is designed for travellers who want a broad introduction to Nepal's heritage, religion, landscapes and wildlife without any trekking.
The tour opens with a guided day in the Kathmandu Valley, visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Pashupatinath temple, the great stupas of Boudhanath and Swayambhunath, and Patan Durbar Square. Day 2 brings a scenic six-to-seven-hour drive west along the Trishuli River to Pokhara (822 m), where two days cover Phewa Lake, the World Peace Stupa, Tal Barahi temple and Begnas Lake. From Pokhara the tour turns south-east to Lumbini (about 85 m), the UNESCO-listed site where Siddhartha Gautama was born in the fifth century BCE. Two days here cover the Mayadevi temple, the Sacred Garden, the Ashokan pillar and dozens of monasteries built by Buddhist nations from around the world. The tour then moves to Chitwan National Park, home to the one-horned rhinoceros, the Bengal tiger, gharial crocodiles and over 600 bird species, for an afternoon on the river and a full-day jeep and canoe safari. A return drive to Kathmandu on Day 8 closes the loop before the departure day.
The highest point on the tour is Kathmandu at about 1,400 m, and Lumbini and Chitwan are both below 500 m. No fitness test, trekking permit or physical preparation is needed. The sections below cover the itinerary, entry permits, best season, accommodation and what to pack.
