Trip Overview
About the Helambu Valley Trek
The Helambu Valley Trek is a 10-day cultural circuit in Nepal's Langtang National Park, roughly 80 km north-east of Kathmandu. It starts at Sundarijal (1,460 m), climbs through rhododendron and oak forest to the ridgeline settlements of Chisapani (2,300 m) and Kutumsang (2,470 m), crosses the Tharepati ridge at 3,600 m, then drops into the Hyolmo heartland at Tarkeghyang (2,590 m) and Sermathang (2,621 m) before finishing at Melamchi Pul Bazar (880 m) and driving back to Kathmandu. The loop needs only two permits: the Langtang National Park entry and a TIMS card. No restricted-area permit is required.
The Hyolmo (Yolmo) people are the main reason to come. This Buddhist community, distinct from the better-known Sherpas, maintains gompas and mani walls across the ridge villages, grows apples traded as far as Kathmandu, and keeps a tradition of warm hospitality that the more commercial circuits have largely lost. Tarkeghyang Gompa, one of the oldest in the region, dates to the seventeenth century. The mountain backdrop runs from Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) and Ganesh Himal across to Dorje Lakpa and, on clear days, peaks above the Khumbu.
This is a moderate trek, not a strenuous one. Daily stages run 5 to 7 hours on established trail, and the highest night is at Tharepati (3,600 m), well below the altitude threshold where acclimatisation rest days become mandatory. Fit beginners and experienced trekkers alike find the Helambu circuit satisfying: it is short enough to do on two weeks of holiday, close enough to Kathmandu to cut logistics, and culturally rich enough to hold its own against longer, more crowded routes.

A private vehicle takes you on a guided circuit of four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley. Pashupatinath temple on the Bagmati River (the most important Shaivite site in Nepal), Boudhanath stupa (diameter 120 m, one of the largest in Asia), Swayambhunath on its hill above the valley, and Patan Durbar Square with its seventeenth-century Malla palace courtyards. The afternoon is free for gear shopping on Thamel or resting before the trek. Overnight in Kathmandu.

A 45-minute drive north-east reaches Sundarijal (1,460 m), where the Melamchi water project pipeline begins and the Langtang National Park trail starts. The walk climbs steeply through dense forest of oak and rhododendron, crossing the park boundary early. Chisapani (2,300 m) sits on a wide ridge with the first open Himalayan views: Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), Jugal Himal and, on clear mornings, the Ganesh Himal group to the west. About 4 to 5 hours walking. Overnight in Chisapani.

The trail follows the main Shivapuri-Nagarkot ridge north, mostly under forest cover, passing the small checkpoint at Chipling and the village of Golphu Bhanjyang (2,150 m) before a final climb to Kutumsang (2,470 m), a Hyolmo settlement of scattered lodges and a small gompa. The walking is 6 to 7 hours on a clear, well-signed trail with occasional views east to the Jugal Himal. Overnight in Kutumsang.

This is the high day of the circuit. The trail climbs steadily from Kutumsang through subalpine scrub and open pasture, passing the Mangengoth ridge (3,000 m) and the checkpoint at Tharepati (3,600 m), the highest point of the entire trek. Views from the ridge extend across the Langtang range to the north and east, and on clear days south-east to distant Khumbu peaks. The wind can be sharp at the top; have a warm layer accessible. About 6 to 7 hours. Overnight at Tharepati.

From Tharepati the trail turns east and descends the exposed ridge before dropping into the Melamchi valley through forest to Tarkeghyang (also spelled Tarke Ghyang, 2,590 m), the largest and oldest Hyolmo village on the circuit. Tarkeghyang Gompa, believed to date to the seventeenth century, is the religious centre of the valley and worth an hour in the afternoon. Apple orchards surround the village, and the lodges serve fresh apple products in season. About 5 to 6 hours. Overnight in Tarkeghyang.

A comfortable stage traverses the ridge eastward through oak and rhododendron forest to Sermathang (2,621 m), a quieter Hyolmo village with apple orchards and a small gompa. The altitude difference from Tarkeghyang is minimal, so this is the easiest walking day of the trek, around 4 to 5 hours, with mountain views opening across the Melamchi valley. Overnight in Sermathang.

A long descent drops from the ridge through forest and terraced farmland, losing over 1,700 m of altitude on a steep trail to the Melamchi River and the road-head town of Melamchi Pul Bazar (880 m). This is the last trekking day and the knees feel it: trekking poles help on the steeper lower section. About 5 to 6 hours walking. A private car meets you in Melamchi Pul Bazar for the roughly 2-hour drive back to Kathmandu along the Araniko Highway. Overnight in Kathmandu.

The drive from Melamchi Pul Bazar back to Kathmandu takes about 2 hours on the Araniko Highway, arriving mid-morning. The rest of day eight is free: Thamel shopping, a farewell dinner at one of the riverside restaurants in Patan, or a massage after 7 days on the trail. Overnight in Kathmandu.

The Helambu Valley Trek is graded moderate, and the numbers support that label. The highest point is the Tharepati ridge at 3,600 m, reached on day four. At that altitude, mild headache and reduced appetite are possible but serious acute mountain sickness (AMS) is uncommon in healthy adults who have ascended at the pace this itinerary sets. There are no acclimatisation rest days built in, because the profile does not demand them.
Daily walking runs 5 to 7 hours, with the longest stages on the descent from Tharepati to Tarkeghyang and the drop to Melamchi Pul Bazar. The trail is well-maintained and signposted for most of the route, though the Tharepati to Tarkeghyang section crosses open, exposed ridge and is trickier in bad weather. Anyone with a heart or respiratory condition should consult their doctor before booking. Swotah guides carry a first-aid kit and a pulse oximeter, and the route is close enough to Kathmandu that an evacuation can be arranged within a day if needed.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to December) are the two windows when Helambu is at its best. Autumn brings the clearest mountain views after the monsoon rains wash the sky clean, with stable temperatures and dry trail. Spring is warmer at lower elevations, rhododendrons cover the forest slopes below Chisapani and Kutumsang in red and pink, and the ridgeline panoramas are almost as sharp as in autumn.
The summer monsoon (June to August) makes Helambu a leech-heavy, muddy slog, especially in the lower forest, but the upper ridge villages see fewer tourists and the landscape turns an intense green. Winter (December to February) is cold at Tharepati and can bring snow to the ridge, but clear skies and near-empty trails attract trekkers who do not mind cold nights. The season cards below show the month-by-month temperature and recommendation picture.
The Helambu Valley Trek requires two permits: the Langtang National Park entry permit and the TIMS card (Trekkers' Information Management System). Both are issued at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or at the park entry checkpoint. The national park fee is NPR 3,000 for non-SAARC nationals; the TIMS card costs NPR 2,000 for independent trekkers or NPR 1,000 through a registered agency like Swotah.
No restricted-area permit is needed for Helambu, which keeps the paperwork and cost well below what the Manaslu or Upper Mustang circuits demand. Swotah handles the permit applications once you provide a passport copy, and confirms current government-set fees before departure, since the Tourism Board adjusts them periodically. Carry both permits at all times on the trail; checkpoint officers check them at the park entry and occasionally at ridge lodges.
Helambu runs on teahouse lodges, from the first night at Chisapani (2,300 m) to the last trekking night at Melamchi Pul Bazar (880 m). The lodges in Tarkeghyang and Sermathang are the most comfortable on the route, with attached bathrooms, hot showers and a decent menu, because these are larger Hyolmo villages with more competition between guesthouses. Chisapani and Tharepati are simpler, with shared bathrooms and limited hot water.
Kathmandu nights at the start and end of the trip are in standard or deluxe hotel rooms with private bathrooms. On the trail, rooms are clean but basic; a sleeping bag liner adds warmth at Kutumsang and Tharepati, where nights drop below 10°C in autumn and below freezing in winter. Swotah contacts guesthouses ahead of each stage to reserve rooms, particularly important in the October and November peak weeks.
Teahouse cooking on the Helambu circuit runs from dal bhat (lentils, rice, vegetable curry) to noodles, Tibetan bread, fried rice and seasonal apple products in the Tarkeghyang area, where the Hyolmo orchards produce the apples that this valley is known for across Nepal. Swotah includes three meals a day on the trek, along with one drink per meal.
Water on the ridge comes from springs and tap points at lodges. Treat it before drinking: lodges sell boiled water, and purification tablets, a squeeze filter or a UV pen all work. Aim for 2 to 3 litres a day at lower elevations and closer to 3 litres near Tharepati. Tap water untreated is not safe. Carry a reusable bottle to cut down on the single-use plastic that piles up in lodges with no waste collection.
The trek starts at Sundarijal, a 45-minute drive from central Kathmandu, which makes the Helambu circuit one of the most accessible multi-day treks in Nepal. No domestic flight, no overnight bus and no long jeep ride to reach the trailhead. Swotah transfers you by private car from your Kathmandu hotel to Sundarijal on day two.
The trek finishes at Melamchi Pul Bazar (880 m) on the Araniko Highway, where a private car picks you up for the roughly two-hour drive back to Kathmandu. The road is paved and reliable. For the Kathmandu sightseeing day (day one), Swotah provides a private vehicle for the UNESCO World Heritage Site circuit covering Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath and Patan Durbar Square.
The Hyolmo (Yolmo) people are a Tibetan-Buddhist community who have lived on the Helambu ridges for several centuries, distinct from both the lowland Newars and the high-altitude Sherpas of the Khumbu. Their language belongs to the Tibetan family, and their gompas, mani walls and prayer-flag strings are a constant presence from Chisapani all the way to Sermathang. Tarkeghyang Gompa, in the village of the same name at 2,590 m, is one of the oldest in the Langtang region and a functioning religious centre, not a museum.
The Hyolmo apple harvest, in September and October, turns the orchards around Tarkeghyang and Sermathang into a working landscape of ladders, baskets and cider-sharp air. Apples here are traded down to Kathmandu markets, and many lodges serve fresh apple juice and apple brandy. Walking respectfully around mani walls (always clockwise), removing shoes before entering gompas and asking before photographing people in prayer are small gestures the communities notice and appreciate.
Langtang National Park, established in 1976, covers the Helambu area and protects one of the more biodiverse forest zones in the central Himalaya. The lower trail between Sundarijal and Chisapani passes through dense oak, rhododendron and alder forest that holds red pandas, Himalayan black bears, Himalayan tahr and langur monkeys, though sightings require an early start and some luck.
The upper ridge between Kutumsang and Tharepati transitions to subalpine scrub and open pasture, with monal pheasants (the national bird) common in the early morning. The forest sections are best in spring when rhododendrons peak, typically late March to mid-April, and in autumn when the oak canopy turns gold. The national park prohibits wood fires by trekkers and plastic waste dumping; the lodges use gas stoves and expect guests to carry out their rubbish.
A licensed guide is not legally mandatory on the Helambu circuit, but Swotah includes one on every trip because the route has junctions that are easy to miss and because the guide is your primary emergency contact, local interpreter and cultural narrator. Swotah's guides hold Ministry of Tourism licences and Nepal Mountaineering Association first-aid training.
A porter is available and recommended: one porter carries 20 to 25 kg, capped at that weight, so you walk with a daypack of 10 to 12 kg at most. Swotah provides a duffel bag for the porter and covers their meals, accommodation, insurance and a fair daily wage. The standard ratio is two trekkers per porter. If you prefer to carry everything yourself, a well-fitted 40-litre pack is enough for a 10-day moderate trek with teahouse support.
Mobile coverage in Helambu is better than on more remote circuits. Nepal Telecom (NTC) gives a usable signal in most ridge villages, including Tarkeghyang and Sermathang, though dead spots appear on the open ridge near Tharepati. Ncell coverage is patchier above 2,500 m. Swotah provides a tourist SIM on request.
Wi-Fi is available at most lodges for a small fee, with speeds varying from adequate in Tarkeghyang to near-useless at Tharepati. Charging costs NPR 100 to 200 per device and is available at every lodge. A small power bank (10,000 mAh) covers two or three days between charge points and is useful for the Tharepati stage, the highest and most remote night on the route.
