Trip Overview

About the Hidden Lake and Glacier Trek

The Hidden Lake and Glacier Trek is a 17-day Annapurna off-beat route that extends the Khopra Ridge corridor beyond the well-trodden trail to reach the little-known Hidden Lake at 4,250 m, sitting directly below the glaciers of Annapurna South (7,219 m) inside the Annapurna Conservation Area. The trek climbs through the large Gurung village of Ghandruk (1,950 m), gains the forested ridge at Tadapani (2,590 m) and Bayeli Kharka (2,900 m), then pushes onto Khopra Ridge (3,870 m) and the sacred Kaire Lake (4,200 m) before crossing open glacial terrain to the Hidden Lake itself.

The upper section, from Celli Kharka (3,850 m) to Hidden Lake (4,250 m) and the descent to Annapurna South Base Camp (3,400 m), is a camping traverse on a route used by few trekking parties each season. The Annapurna South massif fills the skyline for the final four days of walking, with Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) and Hiunchuli (6,441 m) framing the glaciers overhead. The descent comes down through Chhomrong (2,100 m), the hot springs at Jhinu Danda (1,220 m), and out to Pokhara.

Two permits cover this route: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS card. The lower days follow the community lodge trail of the Khopra Ridge route; the upper days above Bayeli Kharka use tented camps with a cook crew, since permanent lodges do not exist past Khopra Ridge. The sections below cover difficulty, permits, camping logistics, seasons and what to pack.

The Hidden Lake and Glacier Trek is graded moderate to challenging. The lower days on the Khopra Ridge trail are moderate; the upper camping section from Khopra to Hidden Lake at 4,250 m and Annapurna South Base Camp is more demanding because nights are in tents above 3,800 m and the terrain is unfamiliar and lightly tracked.

Moderate to challenging. 5-7 hr days, max 4,250 m (Hidden Lake). Camping from day 5. No technical terrain; good fitness required.

Everything you need to know

The Hidden Lake and Glacier Trek is graded moderate to challenging. The lower section through Ghandruk, Tadapani and Bayeli Kharka is moderate and well-tracked, running 4 to 6 hours a day over clear forest trail. The upper section shifts in character: from Bayeli Kharka the nights move into tented camps, the trail is lightly marked, and Hidden Lake at 4,250 m is the high point, reached on day 10 after two nights between 3,850 m and 4,200 m.

Spending consecutive nights above 3,800 m without a formal acclimatisation rest day raises the risk of acute mountain sickness (AMS) above that of a standard Annapurna teahouse trek. The signs to watch for are persistent headache, nausea, fatigue that rest does not resolve, and loss of coordination. Swotah guides carry a first-aid kit and a pulse oximeter on this route. Daily walking runs 5 to 7 hours, with the Hidden Lake day the longest single effort. No technical climbing or fixed ropes are involved, but trekkers should be fit, comfortable on open mountain terrain and aware of altitude protocols.
