About the Jumla Heritage Trail

The Jumla Heritage Trail is a remarkable journey through the cultural heartland of western Nepal. Combining ancient civilizations, sacred temples, alpine meadows, pristine forests, and Nepal's largest natural lake, this expedition offers an authentic Himalayan experience far from Nepal's more popular trekking routes.

Beginning in Kathmandu, the journey flies west to Jumla via Nepalgunj before exploring the historic town of Chandannath. The expedition then follows scenic mountain trails through Guthichaur to the legendary Sinja Valley, the ancient capital of the Khasa Kingdom, before continuing into the pristine wilderness of Rara National Park. The adventure concludes with a scenic overland journey through Gamgadhi and the Karnali Highway before returning to Kathmandu.

Along the way, travelers experience centuries-old traditions, archaeological treasures, spectacular Himalayan scenery, diverse wildlife, and the warm hospitality of the people of Karnali Province.

The Jumla Heritage Trail is one of western Nepal's finest cultural trekking experiences, combining history, archaeology, remote mountain landscapes, and protected wilderness. The expedition explores the historic town of Chandannath before trekking through the beautiful alpine meadows of Guthichaur to Sinja Valley, one of Nepal's most significant archaeological and cultural sites.

Once the capital of the medieval Khasa Kingdom, Sinja Valley preserves ancient temples, stone inscriptions, traditional villages, and archaeological remains that reflect the origins of the Nepali language and the rich history of western Nepal. The journey then continues through forests of pine, fir, and juniper into Rara National Park, home to Nepal's largest natural freshwater lake.

Surrounded by pristine forests and magnificent Himalayan scenery, Rara Lake offers peaceful hiking trails, exceptional birdwatching, abundant wildlife, and breathtaking panoramic viewpoints. The expedition concludes with a scenic drive through Gamgadhi and the Karnali Highway before returning to Kathmandu, completing an unforgettable journey through one of Nepal's most remarkable cultural and natural landscapes.

The Jumla Heritage Trail is graded moderate to demanding. Walking days average 6-7 hours on village and forest trails, with steady climbs to Guthichaur (about 3,080 m) and into Rara National Park. The optional Murma Top viewpoint at roughly 3,700 m is the highest point, reached as a day hike. • By air. The package includes the one-hour Kathmandu-Nepalgunj flight and the 35-minute Nepalgunj-Jumla mountain flight. The return leg travels by road from Rara through Gamgadhi and the Karnali Highway to Nepalgunj, then flies back to Kathmandu, which avoids depending on a second mountain flight.
