Mountain Flight

October, November, December, January, February and March are the prime months for Mountain Flight, because those months consistently produce the clear, calm mornings that give the sharpest view of the peaks. Autumn (October and November) brings stable, dry air after the monsoon season, with a low haze layer and sharp ridgelines. Winter (December to February) is the coldest period in Kathmandu but often gives the clearest skies of the year, and the snowcapped summits stand out against a deep blue sky. Spring (March to May) is warm, clear and busy.

The summer monsoon (June to September) brings heavy cloud cover over the Himalaya, and flights are frequently cancelled or see little through the cloud. If you plan to visit during that window, build in flexibility. Flights are always weather-dependent and can be postponed on any day of year; Swotah will arrange a rebooking if your flight is cancelled.

Everest (8,849 m), the world's highest mountain, is the centrepiece of the route. The aircraft approaches from the west, and Everest appears roughly 40 to 50 minutes into the flight as the route reaches the Khumbu area. Neighbouring Lhotse (8,516 m) stands directly to the south of Everest and is visible at the same time. Makalu (8,485 m) rises a short distance to the east. Cho Oyu (8,188 m), the sixth-highest mountain, is visible earlier in the flight on the Tibetan border.

Closer ranges appear throughout: Ganesh Himal (7,422 m) near Kathmandu, the Langtang group to the north, Gauri Shankar (7,134 m) above the Rolwaling valley, and the Numbur massif. The full route passes more than 20 named peaks above 6,000 m. Cloud cover is the only factor that can hide any peak; a clear morning shows the complete panorama from Nepal's far north to the Tibetan plateau.

Kathmandu is served by Tribhuvan International Airport (IATA: KTM), with direct international connections from Doha, Dubai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and several other hubs. Most travellers from Europe and North America connect through one of the Gulf or South-East Asian hub airports. Nepal requires a tourist visa on arrival for most nationalities: bring a passport valid for at least six months, one passport photo and the fee in US dollars (roughly USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days; verify the current fee before travel).

The drive from TIA to the Thamel hotel district takes between 20 and 45 minutes depending on traffic. Kathmandu sits at 1,400 m, and there is no acclimatisation concern for a one to three day stay at this altitude before the flight.

Window clarity matters: use the cloth provided to clean the inside surface before takeoff, because oil smears and condensation soften sharpness noticeably. The morning sun comes from the east, so peaks will be side-lit or front-lit depending on your position in the cabin. RAW format gives the best results if your camera supports it; highlights on snow are easily managed in post-processing. Battery charge is critical: Kathmandu hotels have standard sockets, and there is no charging possible during the one-hour flight.

Mountain Flight has a low on-the-ground footprint compared to a trek, but a few points help keep the experience responsible. Respect the no-smoking and no-standing rules in the cabin; the flight crew manage timing carefully to give each row its window view of the peaks. At Kathmandu heritage sites visited before or after the flight, follow the posted rules: remove shoes where indicated, dress modestly at Hindu and Buddhist sites, and ask before photographing priests or worshippers.

USD 5 to 10 per guide per day is the standard tipping guideline in the Kathmandu tourism sector, though tipping is not mandatory. Kathmandu has reliable 4G mobile coverage from Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell across the city and the airport area. Swotah can arrange a tourist SIM on arrival. The hotel has Wi-Fi and standard power sockets (Type C and Type D are most common; a universal adapter covers both). There is no Wi-Fi or charging on the mountain flight aircraft itself.

The early start time for the flight, typically a hotel pickup around 05:30 to 06:00, means a very early alarm on Day 1.
