Trip Overview

About the Mountain Flight

Mountain Flight is a roughly one-hour scenic flight from Kathmandu that carries passengers east along the Himalayan range at a cruising altitude of about 7,600 m, putting the world's highest peaks at close range through the aircraft window. Everest (8,849 m), Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Makalu (8,485 m), Lhotse (8,516 m) and several other 8,000 m summits are visible on a clear morning from the window seat, giving a panorama that takes most of the flight to pass.

The flight departs from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu shortly after sunrise, when the mountain air is calmest and the sky is sharpest. Every passenger is allocated a window seat so the view is shared equally throughout the cabin, and the captain invites passengers forward for a brief cockpit view of the peaks before the aircraft turns back west. The entire experience is airborne, so there is no altitude exposure, no physical fitness requirement and no acclimatisation needed.

The package includes airport transfers and a hotel night in Kathmandu. It suits independent travellers with limited time, families, and anyone who cannot undertake a trek but still wants a close look at the highest mountains on earth. The sections below cover the best season, what to expect on the flight, the booking process and what to bring.

Everything you need to know

Mountain Flight departs Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu shortly after sunrise, typically between 06:30 and 07:30, when the mountain air is calmest and the visibility is at its best. The aircraft flies east along the southern face of the Himalaya at a cruising altitude of approximately 7,600 m (roughly 25,000 ft), a height that places the cabin at eye level with the upper flanks of the range.

Every passenger receives a window seat, which the airline allocates before boarding. The flight path runs past Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gauri Shankar, Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu before the aircraft turns and retraces the route west. Near the turnaround point, the captain invites small groups to the cockpit for a direct view through the flight deck windows. Total flight time is about one hour. There is no altitude gain for passengers; the aircraft is pressurised and heated throughout.
