Trip Overview

About the Nepal On Bicycle

Nepal On Bicycle is a 17-day road cycling tour that covers roughly 700 km from Pokhara through Nepal's central hills, the Terai plains, the Tribhuvan Highway and into the Kathmandu Valley. The route links Pokhara, Bandipur, Gorkha, Devghat, Chitwan, Hetauda, Daman and the three heritage cities of the valley, carrying riders from lake-district roads at around 800 m up to Daman at 2,322 m before the final descent to Kathmandu.

A support vehicle carries all luggage throughout, so riders travel light. Nights are in guesthouses and small hotels rather than the roadside; the team cooks or sources local food along the way. The cycling spans 14 active riding days with two rest or city-tour days in Kathmandu, and one rest day in Sauraha for a Chitwan jungle excursion. Average daily distance is 60-80 km on paved and well-graded roads, with one long 150 km stage each on day 5 (Gorkha to Devghat) and day 6 (Devghat to Sauraha).

Bicycle options are road bicycle, hybrid bike or e-bike; all are provided with a helmet. The tour is classed moderate-to-strenuous: no technical off-road riding, but several big climbing days require cycling fitness. The sections below cover the best season, what roads and terrain to expect, permits, food, gear and logistics.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

Nepal On Bicycle follows paved and well-graded roads throughout, so there is no technical mountain biking, but the physical demands are real. The 17-day route averages 60-80 km per riding day, with two 150 km marathon stages (Gorkha to Devghat on day 5, and Devghat to Sauraha on day 6) and the signature climb from Hetauda to Daman on day 9, a 65 km ascent that tops out at 2,322 m on the Tribhuvan Highway.

The Terai section between Chitwan and Hetauda is flat and fast. The Pokhara-area roads on day 2 and day 3 are rolling hill-country climbing. The Kathmandu Valley loop on days 11-13 involves moderate climbs. Riders should arrive able to cover 70 km in 5-6 hours at touring pace. Road bikes, hybrid bikes and e-bikes are all available; e-bikes are a strong option for the Hetauda-Daman day. A support van is with the group at all times and can carry any rider who needs to stop.
