Trip Overview

About the Panch Pokhari Trek

The Panch Pokhari Trek is a 15-day off-the-beaten-path trek to a group of five sacred high lakes at around 4,100 m, set below the Jugal Himal in Sindhupalchok, northeast of Kathmandu. Panch Pokhari means five lakes, and the basin is a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, busiest at the August Janai Purnima full moon and quiet for the rest of the year.

The trail starts at Chautara, a 5 to 6 hour drive from Kathmandu, and climbs through Tamang villages, terraced farms along the Indrawati valley, rhododendron forest and high meadows to the lakes below Phurbi Chyachu. From the ridges the views run across the Jugal and Langtang ranges to Dorje Lakpa, Gauri Shankar and beyond. Because few trekkers come here, the lodges are basic and the trail feels genuinely remote.

The trek is graded moderate: it tops out near 4,100 m with no technical climbing, but the days are long, the facilities simple and the route little-travelled. Good fitness and a tolerance for basic lodging matter more than altitude. The sections below cover permits, difficulty, the sacred lakes, seasons and what to pack.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

The Panch Pokhari Trek is graded moderate, topping out at the lakes near 4,100 m with no technical climbing or high pass. Altitude is a smaller worry than on the big circuits, but the trek is remote, the days are long at 5 to 6 hours, and the facilities are basic, so self-sufficiency and steady fitness matter most.

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is uncommon at these heights but still possible on the climb to the lakes, so drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day and tell the guide about any headache. The trail crosses forest, meadow and exposed ridgeline, with steady ascents and descents. Because few trekkers come here, you should be comfortable with simple lodges and a quiet trail. Swotah guides keep a steady pace and carry a first-aid kit.
