Trip Overview

About the Rock Climbing in Kathmandu

Rock Climbing in Kathmandu is a 3-day guided activity based entirely in the Kathmandu Valley, reaching a maximum elevation of about 1,556 m at the crags inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. The climbing sites sit within 30 minutes of the city centre, so there is no long approach, no trekking and no altitude concern. Nagarjun Forest Reserve, the primary crag, offers bolted sport routes and top-rope lines on sound gneiss and limestone faces suited to beginners and intermediate climbers alike.

The activity covers single-pitch routes from grades that first-timers can manage up to sustained lines that test experienced climbers. Each session opens with a full safety briefing from a licensed Nepali guide: harness fitting, helmet checks, belay technique and a walk-through of the fall-protection system before anyone leaves the ground. All technical gear is provided, so participants need only arrive in comfortable clothes and with reasonable grip strength. The minimum age is 18 and groups run between 2 and 7 people.

The Kathmandu Valley also has crags at Hattiban and the Balaju area for variety, and guides can suggest the right wall for each client's grade on the day. The guide sections below cover the climbing grades, the best season for dry rock, the Shivapuri Nagarjun park entry fee, accommodation and food options, transport to the crag, and what to pack.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

Rock Climbing in Kathmandu covers bolted sport routes and top-rope lines at Nagarjun Forest Reserve, with grades ranging from beginner-friendly single-pitch slabs up to sustained overhangs that push intermediate climbers. The route grades on offer span the lower French/UIAA scale (roughly 4a to 6b) so a complete first-timer starts on ground-level instruction and works up to a full pitch by the end of session one. More experienced climbers can aim at the crags' steeper lines on the same day.

The physical demands are grip strength, balance and footwork on rock, not aerobic fitness. The maximum elevation is 1,556 m inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, well below any altitude threshold, so there is no acclimatisation requirement. Each participant is fitted into a harness and helmet, checked by the guide, and briefed on the belay system before the first clip. The guide stays on the rock with the group throughout each session and controls rope management at all times.
