Trip Overview

About the Spiritual Retreat Nepal

Spiritual Retreat Nepal is an 8-day yoga and meditation programme in the Kathmandu Valley that combines three of Nepal's most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites with daily practice sessions in Bhaktapur. The retreat covers Namobuddha Monastery (Thrangu Tashi Yangtse) at 1,750 m, the Pharping meditation complex near Asura Cave, and the medieval city of Bhaktapur, threading together heritage, quiet hillside monasteries and guided inner practice without any trekking.

Namobuddha Monastery is one of the three most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal. The site is associated with the Jataka tale of the Buddha offering his body to a starving tigress, and its hilltop location above the Kavrepalanchok valley gives a peaceful setting for morning practice. Pharping, in the southern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, holds Asura Cave where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is said to have attained realisation, alongside Neydo Monastery and the Yangleshoe shrines. Together with Bhaktapur's 15th-century Durbar Square and quiet courtyards, the retreat moves between active pilgrimage and seated practice in a single coherent programme.

No yoga or meditation experience is required. The programme suits beginners and returning practitioners equally, and all sessions are led by a qualified guide and teacher. Vegetarian and vegan food is available throughout. The retreat stays low, between 1,300 m and 1,750 m across all eight days, so altitude is not a concern. The sections below cover the pace and who the retreat suits, the best season, entry requirements, accommodation, food and what to pack.

Everything you need to know

In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.

Spiritual Retreat Nepal is an easy programme: no trekking, no altitude stress and no prior yoga or meditation experience required. The highest stop, Namobuddha Monastery, sits at about 1,750 m, and the Pharping and Bhaktapur days stay between 1,300 m and 1,400 m. Each day mixes a guided heritage visit with one or two practice sessions, so the physical demand is light and the days feel varied rather than static.

The retreat suits first-time meditators, practising yogis who want a cultural context for their practice, and anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism, Newar heritage or a restorative break from busy travel. Vegetarian and vegan meal options are available throughout. Swotah's local teachers and guides keep groups small, which means sessions are adaptable to the pace and needs of the people in the room. Families and solo travellers both join this retreat.
