Trip Overview
About the Best of Nepal Tour
Best of Nepal Tour is a 12-day circuit that links the country's most visited destinations in a single, straightforward itinerary. The route covers the UNESCO-listed heritage sites of the Kathmandu Valley, the lake city of Pokhara, a jungle safari in Chitwan National Park, and the Himalayan viewpoint ridge of Nagarkot, then adds a side loop through Bhaktapur, the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Namobuddha, the village of Balthali and the medieval town of Panauti before returning to Kathmandu for departure.
The tour starts with a guided day around Kathmandu's World Heritage Sites: Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, the Patan and Kathmandu Durbar Squares, and Swayambhunath. It then moves to Pokhara (822 m) for Phewa Lake and the World Peace Stupa, followed by a 4-to-5-hour drive into the Terai lowlands to Chitwan, home to the one-horned rhinoceros, the Bengal tiger and the Gharial crocodile. The final cultural section covers Bhaktapur's Durbar Square, a sunset and sunrise at Nagarkot (2,175 m), a morning at the Namobuddha monastery complex, and a short hike through farmland to Balthali village.
No trekking fitness is required. The highest overnight is Nagarkot at 2,175 m, well below any acclimatisation threshold. Most days are city sightseeing, drives and short walks. The sections below cover permits, best season, transport, accommodation and packing.

Everything you need to know
In-depth guides on accommodation, food, permits, insurance and special considerations — tap any topic to expand.
Best of Nepal Tour is an easy, low-altitude circuit. The highest point is Nagarkot at 2,175 m, well below any altitude concern, and most days follow the same pattern: a private vehicle covers the ground between destinations, then the guide leads a few hours of sightseeing on foot at each site.
The physical demands are light. The Namobuddha-to-Balthali stretch is a half-day hike through farmland at around 1,550 m, the most sustained walking of the tour. The Chitwan programme is jeep and canoe safari, not a trek. The heritage sites in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur involve walking on uneven paving. The tour suits families with children, older travellers and first-time visitors to Nepal who want a broad overview of the country rather than a single deep activity.
Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) are the best months for Best of Nepal Tour. Skies are clearest, Himalayan views from Nagarkot are at their sharpest, and temperatures across Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan are comfortable for sightseeing and safari. October gives the highest probability of seeing the Everest massif on the Nagarkot sunrise horizon.
Winter (December to February) is cool and dry in the hills and warm in lowland Chitwan, where wildlife viewing in the dry season is often better because animals gather near water. Nagarkot mornings are cold but clear. The summer monsoon (June to August) brings rain, reduced visibility for mountain views and leeches on the Balthali trail, though Chitwan's rivers run high and the valley temples are less crowded. The season cards above show the month-by-month picture.
Most travellers enter Nepal on a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, available for 15, 30 or 90 days. Bring a passport valid for at least six months, one passport photo and the fee in cash. Swotah confirms current visa fees before your trip.
The tour includes several site entry fees that are handled or itemised for you: Chitwan National Park fees for the jeep and canoe safari; Bhaktapur Durbar Square entry (a well-known fixed-fee heritage site); Kathmandu Valley UNESCO heritage site entries at Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and the Durbar Squares; and fees at Namobuddha monastery. No trekking permits are required because the Balthali hike is outside any restricted zone. Swotah arranges all permits in advance so there are no on-the-day surprises.
Accommodation on Best of Nepal Tour is 3-star hotels in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Nagarkot, each with private bathrooms, hot water and Wi-Fi. In Chitwan you stay at a jungle lodge near Sauraha in keeping with the national park setting. In Balthali the night is at the Balthali Village Resort, a comfortable eco-lodge in the Kavrepalanchok hills.
Nagarkot hotels are chosen for their east-facing mountain outlook, giving the best chance of a clear Himalayan sunrise from the room or terrace. Upgrades to boutique properties are available at most stops on request. Rooms are pre-booked, so peak-season availability is secured in advance.
Food on Best of Nepal Tour runs from Nepali staples, dal bhat (lentils, rice and curry) and Newari set meals, to international cafe menus in Thamel, Pokhara lakeside and Sauraha. Breakfast is included at every hotel. In Chitwan the lodge serves full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are all provided as part of the jungle programme.
Pokhara lakeside and Thamel both have long-running restaurants with varied menus, including good vegetarian options. In Balthali the village resort provides simple meals. Bottled and treated water is available throughout. Tell Swotah about any dietary needs before departure so the team can brief the hotels and lodge in advance.
Best of Nepal Tour runs on a private vehicle with a dedicated driver and guide. The main road legs are Kathmandu to Pokhara (about 7 hours), Pokhara to Chitwan (4 to 5 hours), Chitwan back to Kathmandu (6 to 7 hours), and then day trips to Bhaktapur, Nagarkot, Namobuddha and Panauti from the Kathmandu Valley base.
A domestic flight upgrade from Kathmandu to Pokhara (25 minutes) or Chitwan to Kathmandu is available for travellers who want to save time. Tourist coach is the budget alternative for the long highway legs. Mountain roads slow in the monsoon. Within cities, sightseeing is by vehicle and on foot at each site.
Best of Nepal Tour covers six distinct areas of Nepal. In Kathmandu you visit the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath, Patan Durbar Square, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Changu Narayan and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Bhaktapur gets a dedicated half-day to walk the Taumadhi and Dattatraya squares, the 55-Window Palace and the Nyatapola Temple.
In Pokhara you boat on Phewa Lake to the Tal Barahi island temple and take in the World Peace Stupa and Davis Falls. In Chitwan National Park you do a jeep safari and a dugout canoe ride on the Rapti River, then watch an evening Tharu cultural programme. Nagarkot gives a ridge-top sunrise with a clear view across the Himalayan arc from Langtang to Everest. The final section takes you to Namobuddha, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal, for a morning visit and a half-day hike through Kavrepalanchok farmland to Balthali village.
Best of Nepal Tour is led by a licensed English-speaking guide who covers the full circuit: heritage briefings at the Kathmandu Valley sites, wildlife identification in Chitwan, and orientation at Namobuddha. In Chitwan a specialist jungle guide leads the jeep and canoe safaris. All Swotah guides hold Ministry of Tourism licences from the Nepal Tourism Board.
Because the tour is vehicle-based with only short walks, no porters are needed and you manage your own day bag throughout. A guide who speaks another language can often be arranged on request. Your guide also acts as the day-to-day logistics contact, handling hotel check-ins, vehicle coordination and permit queues so the group keeps moving.
Connectivity on Best of Nepal Tour is reliable, because the route stays in well-served tourist areas. Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell both provide 4G coverage across Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Nagarkot. Swotah provides a tourist SIM card for use during the tour.
All hotels have Wi-Fi and power sockets for charging. The Balthali village resort also has power, though a power bank is useful during the day's hike. A universal travel adapter is worth packing for Nepal's mixed socket types. The Namobuddha monastery area has limited cell signal on some networks.
Responsible travel protects Nepal's heritage sites, its national parks and its communities. At Chitwan, follow your guide's instructions during safari, keep a safe distance from wildlife and stick to the marked paths. At Hindu and Buddhist sites, dress modestly, remove shoes where required and ask before taking close photographs of worshippers.
Tipping is customary in Nepal's tourism sector. A common guideline is 10 to 15% of the trip cost, distributed among your guide, driver, jungle guide and lodge staff. Tips go directly to the workforce and represent a meaningful portion of seasonal income. Carrying small-denomination rupees makes tipping straightforward. Booking with a registered operator like Swotah ensures that park fees, staff insurance and government taxes are paid correctly.
