How is the Manaslu circuit trek in April?

April month is one of the most favorable times for the Manaslu circuit trek. All the aspects, like temperature, weather, and skies, are in the perfect condition for you to trek. The clear weather and skies have a better view of the scenes around and the mountains compared to months of monsoon season. The trails are in good condition. Trees have beautiful green leaves, flowers are blooming, and wildlife gets out of hibernation. During April, the weather is easy to predict. The days are usually warm and sunny. Although the days are hot, the evenings and afternoons are quite chilly.

Weather and temperature during April in the Manaslu region

By the time April starts, the temperature starts increasing. The average temperature of the month ranges from 6°C / 43°F to 12°C/ 53.6°F. The lower regions of the trek that have plain lands have warmer temperatures. And the higher hilly and Himalayan regions have colder temperatures than average. The increment in temperature defreezes all the frozen lakes and rivers. Carry an umbrella or wear a hat and make sure you have sunblock on to protect the skin from being harmed by the sun. As the temperature in the lower lands is warmer, you can pack lighter clothes to trek; however, for the colder region make sure to carry warmer trekking clothes.

No heavy precipitation is expected in the Manaslu region during April. There is no possibility of storms and strong wind. Since the weather is warm and clear, all the paths are undamaged by rain. The days start to get longer, and the nights start to get shorter. One has more than enough time before sunset to complete long treks.

How are wildlife and vegetation during April?

Manaslu region is rich in coniferous plants and trees. Larch (Larix Himalaica), Needlewood trees (Schima wallichii), chinquapin, also known as chinkapin, etc., are the trees that dominate the Manaslu region. These are evergreen trees that start blossoming in April. Some of these trees' bud flowers are used for decorating houses.

Many plants that grow here have great medicinal value. Aconite / Monkashood / Blue Rocket Plant treats fear, anxiety, fever, congestion, headaches, influenza, and many other issues. Likewise, Jatamasi is used to treat epilepsy, mental illness, and hysteria and is used for hair growth. Panchaule (Dactylorhiza hatagirea), Sugandawal (Valeriana jatamansi),  Yarshagumba (Ophiocordyceps sinensis), etc., are other plants found in the Manaslu region used as herbal medicine.

The Manaslu conservation area of the Manaslu region protects many endangered species of wildlife namely the jackal brown bear, Musk deer, Red fox, Lynx, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Serow, Wooly Hare, Red Panda, etc. There is a high probability of seeing these majestic and rare animals in April. This is also an apt period to hear unique birds chirp as you trek in the vibrant sunny environment.

How risky is the Manaslu circuit trek in April?

Compared to the months of winter and summer, the Manaslu circuit trek is a little safer in April. The trails are not as foggy as in winter and not slimy and muddy as in the summer due to rainfall. This makes sailing through the trail easy because of prolonged visibility. You can catch a cold in winter. As the way around is damaged by rain, there is a risk of falling, skidding, and getting sprains and injuries. All these small accidents are less likely to happen in April. However, as the days are hot and sunny, you may feel dizzy due to the hazy surroundings. Dehydration happens quickly so make sure to carry water. Also, the sun is harsh in mid-day, so be sure to cover your skin and stay protected from the sun's rays.

Altitude sickness in the Manaslu region

When we talk about altitude sickness, it does not differ a lot due to the month you pick. At any time of the year, one still has to be cautious of mountain sickness. It has got more to do with the altitude you trek to. (5,106m / 16,751ft) is the highest point one reaches during the Manaslu circuit trek.  Elevation of 2500 m +/ 8200 ft starts the mild symptoms of altitude sickness. Needless to say, there is a very high chance of getting mountain sickness at all three levels: acute mountain sickness, HAPE, and HACE.

To stay away from altitude sickness, drink enough water, eat good food that keeps you full for a long time, acclimatize, and do not trek in a rush. Fast elevation gain and loss is very dangerous, so take your time and trek slowly.

Food and Sheltering in April

There are many teahouses throughout the Manaslu circuit trek’s trail. Despite this, it is hard to get accommodation of your preference during April because of the high flow of travelers. If you want to shelter in the teahouse of your choice, then make bookings in advance. It is hard to find room at the spot during peak trekking months like April. Typical rooms here are cozy and have two beds with a shared washroom.

Talking about food. You are offered simple Nepali food that comprises rice, lentils, vegetables, and pickles. If you want other foods like noodles, dumplings, tortillas, etc., they will make them for you. So, no need to worry about it at all.
