In a significant leap towards modernising its immigration services, the Nepal Immigration Department unveiled, in February 2024, its e-visa platform, automated systems, and online payment facilities. This initiative, inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha, is set to significantly streamline the visa application process, marking a pivotal shift in how travellers will experience entering Nepal.

The introduction of these services was celebrated at a program held at the Immigration Department Office in Kalikasthan, with prominent figures such as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha and Director General Rudra Singh Tamang leading the ceremony. The launch event underscored the government's commitment to embracing digital solutions to enhance the efficiency and transparency of its immigration services.

Beginning 13 February 2024, the e-visa services became operational from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, allowing applicants to submit their visa applications and payments with greater flexibility and convenience. A notable feature is the 'electronic trial authorization,' which represents a preparatory step towards the full implementation of the e-visa system. This initiative allows foreigners to apply for a Nepali visa online and submit their fees accordingly.

Moreover, the department has facilitated the submission of all sorts of service fees and fines through mobile banking and digital wallet service providers, simplifying the process further. Applicants can now easily track the status of their applications and payments online, with the department providing updates via email and SMS. This feature is especially beneficial for those with limited digital literacy, as the department's employees are set to facilitate communication and assist customers through the process.

New Services Offered

E-Visa and Automated System: Since February 2024, applicants can now apply for a Nepali visa online, a service available from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. This system introduces an 'electronic trial authorisation' phase, preparing for the full implementation of the e-visa system.

Online Payment Mechanism: The department has also introduced a system for paying service fees and fines through mobile banking and wallet services. This addition is not just about convenience but also about promoting financial inclusiveness and easing the process for travelers.

Application and Payment Tracking: Applicants can now monitor the status of their applications and payments online. The department promises to keep applicants informed via email and SMS, ensuring transparency and reliability in the process.

Enhancements in Immigration Administration

Director General Rudra Singh Tamang highlighted that introducing automated and online services aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and frugality within the immigration administration. The move towards digitalization, including the upcoming launch of digital signatures, reflects a broader effort to modernize the department’s operations and make them more accessible to the public.

The department also unveiled its new website, providing a user-friendly platform for accessing the online e-visa application and related information.

Impact and Expectations

The shift towards an e-visa system and online services is expected to revolutionize the visa application process, making it more streamlined, efficient, and user-friendly for foreigners wishing to visit Nepal. This transition not only benefits travellers by reducing paperwork and wait times but also enhances the operational efficiency of the immigration department.

Previous Situation vs. New System

Prior to the introduction of these digital services, visa applicants often faced lengthy processes involving multiple visits to the immigration office, extensive paperwork, and long waiting periods. The new system addresses these challenges head-on, offering a seamless online application process that can be completed from anywhere, at any time.

Future Prospects

The Nepal Immigration Department's move towards digitalization is just the beginning. With plans to integrate digital signatures and potentially expand e-visa services, the department is setting the stage for a more digital future. This initiative is expected to pave the way for further advancements in the country's immigration services, making Nepal an even more attractive destination for international visitors.

How Do Tourists Actually Get a Nepal Visa Now?

For most travellers, the practical picture is reassuringly simple. Nepal still issues tourist visas on arrival at Tribhuvan and Gautam Buddha international airports and at land border crossings, and that remains the route the vast majority of visitors use. What the digital system changes is the queue: you can complete the online visa application form up to 15 days before you travel, bring the printed submission receipt, and head straight to the payment counter and immigration desk on landing. Self-service kiosks at the airport handle the same form for those who have not pre-filled it.

Tourist Visa Fees

The visa-on-arrival fees are USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, and USD 125 for 90 days, all multiple-entry. Pay in cash (US dollars or other major currencies) to keep things quick, as card terminals at the counters can be unreliable. Children under 10 receive a free visa, SAARC nationals get their first 30-day visa of the year free, and Indian citizens do not need a visa at all. Tourist visas can be extended at immigration offices in Kathmandu and Pokhara at USD 3 per day (minimum 15 days), up to a maximum stay of 150 days per calendar year.

Tips for a Smooth Arrival

Fill in the online form within the 15-day window (an early submission expires), carry a passport valid for at least six months, keep a passport photo handy in case a kiosk is down, and screenshot or print your form receipt, as airport Wi-Fi can be patchy. If your plans include restricted-area treks such as Upper Mustang or Manaslu, remember those permits are arranged separately through a registered agency once you are in Nepal.
