Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) is the viewpoint ridge directly above Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m) at the head of the Langtang Valley. The climb gains about 900 m, and most trekkers do it as a 3 to 5 hour round trip on their rest day at Kyanjin. From the top you see Langtang Lirung (7,234 m), Langtang Ri and Dorje Lakpa, with the Lirung Glacier below. Tserko Ri (about 4,984 m) is the higher, harder option at 7 to 9 hours. A licensed guide is compulsory in Langtang National Park. Langtang reopened for trekking on 22 October 2026 after the 26 August Rasuwa flood, with treks starting from Thulo Syabru instead of Syabrubesi.

Kyanjin Ri: Langtang's High Point Overview
Kyanjin Ri is just like Kala Patthar of Everest Base Camp. It's one of the highest viewpoints on the Langtang trek that visitors can access. Only nearby Tserko Ri, at around 5,000 m, stands higher. Kyanjin Ri is situated at 4,773 meters (15,659 feet) above sea level, and guess what? You are just as close to your mirror as the mountain range that features Langtang Lirung, Langtang Ri, Dorje Lakpa, and many other famous peaks.

Kyanjin Ri, a grassy ridge, rises directly north of Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 meters). The name Kyanjin is itself derived from the Kyanjin Monastery. The round trip from Kyanjin Gompa takes 3 to 5 hours, and from the top you can experience the pleasing views of glaciers and mountain ranges that will stick with you for your lifetime.
Like other mountain trails, Kyanjin Ri also features steep land topography with cold temperatures that can drop below 0 Degrees Celsius.
Setting Up To Kyanjin Ri
In a normal season, the first step to reach Kyanjin Ri is a bus or jeep from Machhapokhari, Kathmandu, to Syabrubesi, Rasuwa, which takes around 7 to 9 hours. In October 2026 that road was still cut by the 26 August flood, so read the access note below first. You will pass through Nuwakot and Dhunche before you reach Syabrubesi. The next stage is a hike of about 6 to 7 hours from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel. There will be some stops, Khamjing, Sherpagaon, and Rimiche, in the middle of your voyage, where nature does not miss surprising you with its beauty.
After a long trek across Riverside, Ghoda Tabela, and Woodland, you will reach Thangsyap. The pleasant cold wind makes you cherish your hike up to Kyanjin Ri. Most itineraries split this stretch into two days: Lama Hotel to Langtang village (about 3,430 m) takes 5 to 6 hours, then Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa another 3 to 4.
The Kyanjin Ri hike itself is about 2.5 to 3.5 hours up and 1.5 hours down. Start early. Cloud usually builds by late morning in the Langtang Valley and closes the view, and a morning start also gets you up before the afternoon wind.
The Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and chortens in the route are some of the attractive entities of the region. Similarly, you can have a view of Langtang Valley once you reach a point about an hour beyond Thangsyap.
Kyanjin Ri vs Tserko Ri vs Yala Peak
Kyanjin Gompa is the base for three high days out. Kyanjin Ri suits almost everyone who has walked up the valley. Tserko Ri asks for an early start and strong legs, and from its top some trekkers pick out Shishapangma to the north on a very clear morning. Yala Peak is a trekking peak with a climbing permit (USD 350 in spring, USD 175 in other seasons) and usually a night at a high camp.
| Point | Height | Compared | Time from Kyanjin | What it involves | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kyanjin Gompa (start) | 3,870 m | Village, monastery and cheese factory | Base | ||
| Kyanjin Ri | 4,773 m | 3 to 5 h return | About 900 m up on a clear, steep path | Moderate | |
| Tserko Ri | 4,984 m | 7 to 9 h return | About 1,100 m up, longer and rockier | Hard | |
| Yala Peak | 5,500 m | 2 days with a high camp | Trekking peak, NMA permit and crampons | Climb |
Heights for Yala Peak vary between sources, and some list it higher than 5,500 m. Ask your operator which summit the trip targets.
Getting to Kyanjin in October 2026
The 26 August 2026 flood on the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli was caused by a rock and ice avalanche, not a glacial lake burst. It took out the bridges at Betrawati and Syabrubesi; the Betrawati crossing now has a Bailey bridge, while Syabrubesi's are still being rebuilt. TAAN's advisory of 22 October 2026 declared Langtang, Kyanjin and Gosaikunda open for trekking. The two ways in are by road over the Betrawati Bailey bridge to Dhunche or Thulo Syabru, or a longer walk from Chisapani through Helambu and Gosaikunda. Swotah's Langtang departures are running again from Thulo Syabru. Our flood update and what caused the Rasuwa flood have the details, and Langtang permits covers the paperwork.
What Does Kyanjin Ri Offer Its Visitors?
Kyanjin Ri is abundant in natural beauty and mystic Himalayas, so adventures come second to none when traveling to this region. The beautiful Kyanjin Village, numerous glaciers, Langtang river, yak pasture, and the wide range of mountain peaks are the things to be treasured during your trek.

The scenery of several beautiful peaks like Langtang Lirung (7,234 m), Langtang Ri (7,205 m), Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m), and Loenpo Gang (6,979 m) will quench your thirst for mountain viewing and adventures.
Similarly, other peaks and passes, including Changbu, Gangchenpo (6,387 m), Morimoto (6,150 m), Yala Peak (about 5,500 m) and the Ganja La pass will add flavors to your voyage.
Mountain peaks and monasteries are not only the things that Kyanjin Ri offers. The Lirung Glacier and the ice on the Langtang Lirung walls fill the view from the top. Lower down, the valley has rhododendron forest that flowers in March and April.
Kyanjin Gompa itself is one of the fascinating places to explore here. Also, you can travel to a Tibetan village nearby Langtang.
What To Prepare And What To Bring In Kyanjin Ri?
Having a strong will with a healthy physique and mentality is best when traveling to high-altitude destinations. Since treks can sometimes be risky, you must be prepared for the worst.
The first preparation you must make is choosing the perfect time to visit Kyanjin Ri. If you are willing to hike to the region in the winter, you can enjoy snow and quiet trails. It is cold, though. From December to February nights at Kyanjin Gompa fall well below freezing and snow can cover the Kyanjin Ri path, so check conditions with your guide before you go up.
We suggest you be well-prepared with the necessary gear and equipment for the trek. Trekking boots, thermal clothes, winter jackets, eyeglasses, and other equipment are the things that should be in your default plan. Don't miss to include your skincare items on your bucket list since sunburns can be harsh in the afternoon. Many trekkers suggest having proper clothing and UV protective cream during the hike in Kyanjin Ri.
A licensed guide has been compulsory in Langtang National Park since 1 April 2023, and the checkpoints enforce it. Guides earn about USD 25 to 40 a day, know the route and work as a translator when you communicate with people. In addition, if you prefer to hire porters, they are always ready to help carry your luggage and gear. Even though they charge some amount for the service, they will surely make your hike convenient. Don't be short of money - plan your budget according to your activity list.

Hurdles In Reaching Kyanjin Ri
There are no questions about adventures and natural views around the Kyanjin Ri circuit. But reaching there is a challenging job to do. While we talk about what Kyanjin Ri offers its visitors, people might ignore that they must go across several hurdles on the route. Here are the main ones.
Unpredictable Weather: The weather around Kyanjin Ri is dynamic and unpredictable. Since it sits in the lap of the Langtang mountain range, it's always cold, but the weather also can change within an hour. Many trekkers get into the hurdles of storms and heavy snowfall during the winter. So it's better to do weather forecast mapping and start your journey.
Cold Temperatures: Spring months like March, April, and May feature warm temperatures. And if you are attempting the trek during the winter season, you will surely end up in trouble. Cold temperatures under 0 degrees play a vital role in hampering your meaningful hike. It's the reason why the travel agency recommends the trekkers be well-prepared with all the gear they have, for winters can be harsh in this region.
Landslides/Moving Glaciers And Avalanches: Landslides are common on the lower trail in the monsoon, and the region has a hard history with avalanches: the 2015 earthquake set off the one that buried Langtang village. On 26 August 2026 a rock and ice avalanche upstream sent the flood that cut the road into Rasuwa. So it will be wise to trek during October-November or March-May, when the climate is mild and the trails are at their safest.

Kyanjin kharka village
Langtang range is the dream of many trekkers as it never fails to thrill its visitors with its beauty. From the beauty of mountains to the dense white rhododendron forest and glaciers to the clean Langtang river, the trek will bring you one of the best dishes of nature.
So be well-prepared before taking the hike - be physically and mentally ready, pack up your essential gear, and map your budget accordingly. You will find this journey a lifelong, memorable experience. Check the road situation first, then talk to us about a Langtang trek with a morning on Kyanjin Ri.
