Who says the best possible way to observe mountains is limited to trekking and mountaineering? Have you been dying to observe mountains up close but the terms trekking, climbing, and camping holding you back? You don’t need to climb mountains in order to enjoy it or go through days of arduous trekking just because you want to enjoy these vistas up close. If you love mountains but not the idea of a trek, a mountain flight is the easiest way to see the Himalayas up close.

The flight leaves Kathmandu heading east over the valley and the green hills. Unlike the flight to Lukla, it doesn’t land anywhere. A few minutes after take-off the Langtang range comes into view, then Gauri Shankar and the Rolwaling peaks, Cho Oyu, and finally Everest with Lhotse, Nuptse and Makalu beside it.

At what time does the mountain flight begin?

Flights leave early, usually between about 6:30 and 8:30 am, because the sky over the mountains is clearest before cloud builds up around midday. Be at the domestic terminal about an hour before departure, which usually means a hotel pickup around 5:30 to 6:00 am. In winter, morning fog in the Kathmandu valley can hold flights for an hour or two.

If the airline cancels for weather before take-off, you get a refund or a seat on the next available flight. If you booked through an agent, ask whether hotel transfers are refunded too, because some agents deduct them. Airlines don’t refund a flight that goes ahead in hazy conditions, so a spare morning in Kathmandu is the best insurance.

When is the best time to head for mountain flights in Nepal?

October and November are the best months, with the clearest air after the monsoon. December to February is often crisp and clear above the fog, though early flights can wait for the valley to clear. March to May is good early in the day, but haze and afternoon cloud build as spring goes on. From June to September the monsoon hides the peaks and many flights are cancelled. How long will the flight last?

The flight itself lasts about an hour from take-off to landing. With the hotel pickup and check-in, plan on about three hours for the whole morning.

Where Does the Flight Go?

The flight leaves from the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and flies east along the southern edge of the range, roughly parallel to the mountains. It turns back a few miles short of Everest and returns the same way, so the passengers on each side get the mountains on one leg. It doesn’t fly over Namche Bazaar, Tengboche or Everest Base Camp, which sit inside the Khumbu valley to the north. To see those from the air you need a helicopter tour.

What if I Don’t Get a Window Seat?

Airlines sell these flights so that every passenger has a window. On Buddha Air’s 18-seat Beechcraft 1900D every seat is a window seat. On larger aircraft, ask when you book whether you get a dedicated window. Most crews also invite each passenger up to the cockpit for a minute or two near Everest, though that depends on the airline and the day. On the outbound leg the mountains are on the left side of the plane, and they switch to the right on the way back.

What to expect during the mountain flight?

The flight gives you glaciers, high lakes, rivers and gorges laid out below the peaks. You will get to observe the amazing endless series of mountains like Mt. Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Imja Peak, Mt. Gauri Shankar, Thamserku, Kangtega, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Shisha Pangma, Mt. Nuptse and Mt Makalu. On very clear days the crew may point out Kanchenjunga far to the east.

Looking back west on the clearest mornings, some crews point out Manaslu and the Ganesh Himal. The Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges are too far west to see well on this flight. The Pokhara section below covers those.

You see up to five of the world’s fourteen 8,000 m peaks on one flight: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma, and Kanchenjunga as a sixth on the clearest days. No climber sees that many in one outing.

How Close Do You Fly to Everest?

Close, but not over it. The planes cruise at about 7,600 m (25,000 ft), which is below Everest’s 8,849 m summit, and turn back a few miles south of the peak, about 5 nautical miles away by operators’ accounts. The cabin is pressurised, so altitude sickness isn’t a concern. From that height Everest sits just above eye level across the window.

How do I know which mountain am I seeing?

Before take-off, airlines hand out a card that labels each peak. In the air the cabin crew name the mountains as they come into view and give their heights.

Do all the domestic airplanes in Nepal operate mountain flights?

No, they don’t. In 2026 the mountain flights are run by Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines, in small turboprops such as the 18-seat Beechcraft 1900D and larger ATR aircraft. (Simrik Air, sometimes listed in older guides, flies helicopters.) Flights go every morning in the main seasons, weather permitting. In the monsoon many are cancelled.

You don't have to take on a difficult trek to the higher altitude. Instead, the view of the mighty massifs to its closest is possible only by mountain flight. Mountain flight is gaining much popularity among those travelers with less physical endurance or who want to enjoy the mountains without any effort in a short time. It isn’t cheap, but it is one of the most rewarding single mornings you can spend in Nepal.

Is the Mountain Flight Safe?

Every Nepali airline has been on the EU Air Safety List since December 2013, and the country’s record is weaker than most. The last fatal crash of a scheduled passenger flight was Yeti Airlines’ ATR 72 at Pokhara in January 2023, in which all 72 people on board died. Mountain flights only go in clear weather and turn back if cloud builds, which avoids the low cloud behind many Nepali accidents. How much does a mountain flight cost?

In 2026, foreign travellers pay roughly USD 180 to 275 per person through agents, depending on the airline, the season and what is included. Fares booked direct with the airline are lower, with tax on top. Indian nationals pay the equivalent of about USD 165 to 200, and Nepali citizens NPR 8,500 to 12,000. Agent packages usually include hotel transfers and a flight certificate. Can You Take a Mountain Flight From Pokhara?

There is no regular Everest-style fixed-wing sightseeing flight from Pokhara. To see the Annapurnas from the air, most visitors take an ultralight flight or a helicopter.

Other options for visitors trying to catch a flight from Pokhara are available, such as an ultralight (microlight) flight from Pokhara airport, which runs outside the monsoon and gives close views of the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre. Mountain Flight, Helicopter Tour or Trek?

Helicopter landings above Lukla have been restricted by the local municipality since January 2025, though tours were running normally in autumn 2026.
