Nepal’s most famous trekking routes, Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang Valley, draw hundreds of thousands of trekkers every year. But Nepal is an enormous country with more than 80,000 square kilometres of highlands, and the vast majority of its trekking terrain sees almost no foreign visitors at all. These off-the-beaten-path routes take you into that Nepal: remote valleys, rare wildlife, ethnic communities untouched by mass tourism, and views of eight-thousanders with nobody else in the frame. Here are ten destinations that deserve far more attention than they receive.

Saipal Himal Expedition

Saipal Base Camp
Saipal Base Camp

Saipal Himal trek takes trekkers to Sudurpaschim province’s unexplored regions that flaunt terrific geographical diversity, mesmerising Himalayas, including Saipal Himal 7031 m / 23067.59 ft (the second-highest peak of the Far Western development region that mirrors a sleeping golden ox), through an off-beaten path. The trek has the perfect blend of adventure and sights worth beholding, like Api Himal ( 7132 m / 23398.95 ft), Nampa Himal ( 6755 m / 22077 ft), Thado Dhunga, Rajrambha, splendid rocky hills, plateau, exotic wildlife, a wide range of flora and fauna, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and shrines, along with diverse cultures and traditions of the locals.

What sets the Saipal Himal trek apart is its untouched and unexplored parts, as it is a restricted area and one needs a special trekking permit, unlike trekking through other popular regions of Nepal like Annapurna. Saipal Himal Expedition also offers a majestic view of the snow-capped mountains of Uttar Pradesh, India, namely Kap Chuli, Nanda Devi, and Rajrambha. Although the Saipal Himal trek has a few technical aspects that one needs to be familiar with, it doesn’t have high risks of altitude sickness, making it moderately difficult for people with good physical health. It is suggested to trek in the Saipal Himal with a group or guide as the trek trail is sparsely populated, making it hard for trekkers to find a helping hand if needed.
