No. You cannot trek the Manaslu Circuit without a guide. What changed on 22 March 2026 is the group rule. A single trekker can now get the permit, so you can travel as a party of one with your own guide. The Manaslu region was opened to foreign trekkers by the government of Nepal in 1991, and the Manaslu Conservation Area around it is managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) through the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP). The trail is one of the wildest teahouse routes in Nepal. Through the Budhi Gandaki River, this hike leads you to a pristine and remote track. The inhabitants of Manaslu are Gurung and Bhotia (Nubri and Tsum) communities, who follow Buddhism and are influenced by Tibetan culture. So, can we do the Manaslu trek without a guide?
Different people have different tastes and their own way of doing things. Likewise, when trekking, some people prefer to trek solo, while others prefer guides or partners. If you're planning a solo trek, there's good news as of 2026.
As of 22 March 2026, Nepal removed the rule that required a minimum of two trekkers, so a solo trekker can now obtain the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit individually. A licensed guide, however, remains mandatory. A registered, certified guide must walk with you the whole time you are inside the Manaslu restricted area.
Unlike other trekking destinations like Everest base camp, one cannot trek on their own because of the restricted villages and Manaslu Conservation area that are a part of the Manaslu trek.
Manaslu trek without a guide – Why prohibited?
Manaslu’s northern villages sit right against the Tibetan border. Exploring them requires additional permits from the government of Nepal. On top of that, you must trek with a licensed guide, and permits are issued only through a registered agency. Hiring a porter is optional. Since the March 2026 rule change, you no longer need a second trekker, so a solo trekker plus a guide can now do the circuit.
The Tsum Valley, the climb to the Larkya La and the Manaslu Base Camp side trip all sit inside restricted zones near the Tibetan border, so the same permit and guide rules apply there.
What's Allowed on the Manaslu Circuit in 2026
Most of the confusion comes from the word solo. The March 2026 change removed the two-trekker minimum for the permit. It did not remove the guide.

What Happens If You Try Without a Guide?
You won't get far. Permits are checked at Jagat, where the restricted zone starts, and again at Philim, and your guide carries the paperwork for both. A trekker without a restricted area permit and a guide is sent back down the valley. Restricted areas fall under the Immigration Act 2049, and the Department of Immigration enforces it. In November 2025 it fined a trekking agency NPR 40,000 for taking a foreign trekker into a restricted part of the Kanchenjunga area, and trekkers caught in a restricted zone without a permit can face deportation. Your travel insurance may also refuse a rescue claim from a trip that broke the permit rules.
What a Solo Trekker Pays: An Example
Trekking alone costs more per head. Two trekkers split one guide's wages, and a single trekker pays them in full. Permits required for the Manaslu trek
Three permits are a must if one desires to trek the Manaslu circuit. Special trekking permits for the Manaslu trek can only be acquired by a registered travel agency.
The Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) and Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP) permits are issued in Kathmandu or Pokhara, and your agency arranges them together with the restricted area permit.

Manaslu Restricted Area Permit
The area between Jagat and Dharapani is set to be a restricted area by the government as this area is close to Tibet. And the permits for this route can only be applied for via a registered agency. You must have your permit before entering Jagat and keep it until you exit the restricted zone at Dharapani.

Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit
MCAP permits are checked at Jagat and again at Philim (about 1,590 m), where the trail passes the MCAP welcome board.
Regardless of the season, the price for this permit is NPR 3,000 (about USD 20) per person for any number of days.
Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit
Some part of Annapurna falls under the route of the Manaslu trek, which is the reason for acquiring a permit. The price for an ACAP permit is also NPR 3,000 (about USD 20) and is the same throughout the year.
A small Chum-Nubri Rural Municipality development fee is also collected at Jagat. Agencies quote it at about NPR 1,000 to 2,000, so confirm the amount when you book.
Tsum Valley permit (Optional)
If you wish to explore the Tsum Valley, you will need a Tsum Valley permit as well.
Tsum Valley is a side valley off the standard circuit, so you can skip this permit if you aren't going there. The Tsum Valley restricted permit costs USD 40 per person for the first 7 days from September to November and USD 30 from December to August, then USD 7 per person per day.

A licensed guide is mandatory even if you have years of solo trekking behind you. However, looking at the brighter side, there are many benefits of hiring a guide that will help you complete the trek effortlessly.
