About Kathmandu Valley Treks

A Valley That Has Stood for 13 Centuries

Kathmandu Valley cradles three medieval royal cities — Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur — each with its own Durbar Square and centuries of Newari pagoda architecture. The valley holds seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a 20-kilometre radius: the Hanuman Dhoka palace, Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath, and the three Durbar Squares.

The city was founded in 723 AD by King Gunakamadeva, but the valley itself has been continuously inhabited since the 2nd century BC. The Newar people — the valley's indigenous community — gave the world the pagoda, exporting the style as far as Beijing in the 13th century.

For travellers, Kathmandu is both destination and crossroads. Most Himalayan treks begin and end here. Thamel, the city's trekking district, has supplied climbers since Hillary and Tenzing left for Everest in 1953. With Swotah Travel based in the valley, every itinerary starts with a warm welcome at Tribhuvan International Airport.
